The Blue Jays might sign a major corner outfielder as a free agent today, which would make the one they signed last year redundant. Perhaps the Pirates might be interested in acquiring this spare outfielder buccoball.wordpress.com/2026/01/14/a...

The Pirates, for all the strides they've made this winter, still need another bat. Given that we've reached the slow part of the offseason, I thought I'd make a bit of a zany trade proposal: acquire Anthony Santander
An unorthodox trade proposal
We've reached the part of the offseason where things start to slow down around baseball — and this year, that includes the Pirates. Usually, it's hard to say there's a "slow" part of the winter for the Bucs, because that would imply there was a time during the offseason where the team was active. But the Pirates were unusually proactive in December, adding a…

RIP Oakland (1789-2026)
I am completely devastated. This sucks so, so much and I'll have to make sure to stop by one more time before it closes.
January 8, 2026 at 10:53 PM
Can’t really put into words how devastating this would be for the region if the PG is really shutting down. But I suspect it might be a ploy to get out from under the 2014 labor contract after losing their lawsuit against the union.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is ceasing operations. Block family lost their case, and they're taking their ball and going home. Very dark day.

The Pirates need to add one more legitimate hitter, and unless they can pull off a trade — which won't be easy — there's really only one option on the free agent market who fits the bill.
Suárez or bust?
After two weeks of mysterious tweets, trolling, vague guessing from unsourced accounts, and reports that the Pirates were interested but not optimistic, Kazuma Okamoto ended the speculation ahead of his January 4 signing deadline by inking a deal with the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon. I can't remember the last time a free agent was the subject of this level of preoccupation from the fanbase, and there are several reasons why Okamoto drew such singular attention from Bucco diehards.

Pirate fans got another early Christmas present in Ryan O'Hearn, who signed the biggest FA contract for a hitter in team history and who gives the Bucs another good bat to plug into the lineup.

On this day five years ago, the Pirates rudely interrupted my Christmas Eve with news of a transaction. After five offseasons of low-risk, low-upside moves, the Pirates finally swung the kind of trade on Friday that I have been waiting years for them to make.
Bucs land Lowe, 2 others in big trade
The Pirates could not have another ordinary Pittsburgh Pirates offseason. They could not stand pat for most of the winter, and then tinker around the edges of the roster by adding bench players or platoon bats. They could not just add a player or two on one-year, seven-figure deals — either ancient veterans or failed former top prospects who could

There's been a lot of talk this offseason about how the Pirates' aggressiveness is changing their perception around the league. But you can't wash off the stench of a decade of failure in one winter.
Too little, too late?
For the first time in my life, the Pirates are generating actual buzz in the offseason. And the buzz isn't over who the Bucs are going to trade away, but who they might acquire — not just through trades, but possibly on the open market. Already, the Bucs have added Jhostynxon García to their bench via trade, and Gregory Soto to their bullpen through free agency…

On Thursday, the Bucs traded from a position of depth to acquire a young outfielder with some interesting (and one concerning) qualities. My breakdown of last night's trade:
Pirates trade Oviedo for Red Sox outfielder
Earlier this week, ESPN released a list of potential trade targets who could be moved this winter. The Pirates were connected with no fewer than 11 names on that list, including a couple of outfielders on the Red Sox. On Thursday night, the Bucs did swing a trade with Boston, swapping a pitcher for an outfielder — but not for one of the Sox outfielders mentioned by ESPN.

Yesterday, ESPN published an article naming 11 players who could be potential trade targets for the Bucs. I went through that list of names, and considered whether the Pirates could trade for them, and whether they should.
Could and should the Pirates trade for these players
I don't know how I made it through last offseason. The Pirates were coming off a disappointing 2024 campaign in which they had finished with 76 wins, the exact same number of victories as 2023 despite employing Paul Skenes. The rebuild appeared to have stalled out. I wrote that it would be a crucial winter for the franchise. But the Pirates apparently disagreed; after trading for Spencer Horwitz, Ben Cherington hit the "sim to Spring Training" button and the offseason passed with little action.
