Fellow Capricorn & gay the German filmmaker F. W. Murnau was BOTD in 1888 & died in 1931 at 42 in a fatal crash, according to Kenneth Anger allegedly while blowing his chauffeur! Between 1919 and 1931 he directed 21 films including "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror" (1922)

The legend, the woman, the man, the degenerate (in a good way) German superstar Marlene Dietrich was BOTD in 1902 & died in 1992 at 90, her show biz career spanning from the 1910s to the 1980s. Dietrich, who was bisexual, enjoyed the thriving gay bars & drag balls of 1920s Berlin

The great classical Hollywood movie star and fellow Capricorn Richard Widmark, often underrated as an actor, was BOTD in 1914 and died in 2008 at the age of 93. Two of his best noirs are Henry Hathaway's "Kiss of Death" (1947) and Jules Dassin's "Night and the City" (1950)

Fellow Capricorn Mao Zedong, aka Chairman Mao, who was BOTD in 1893 & died in 1976 at 82, was a Chinese politician, revolutionary & totalitarian. Warhol’s Mao prints turned the murderous Communist leader into a desirable, likable, fun-to-have-hanging-around consumable object

Sharon Farrell was BOTD in 1940 & died in 2023 at the age of 82. Her film debut at 19 was in Albert Lipton's "Kiss Her Goodbye" w/ the formidable Elaine Stritch. Some of my fave Farrell pictures include Larry Cohen's "It's Alive" (1974) & Dennis Hopper's "Out of the Blue" (1980)

Underrated Hollywood actor & fellow Cap Frederic Forrest was BOTD in 1936 & died in 2023 at 86. A figure of the New Hollywood movement, he was best known for his collabs w/ Francis Ford Coppola, incl. featured roles in "The Conversation," "Apocalypse Now" & "One from the Heart"

Handsome, tragic jazz legend Chet Baker was BOTD in 1929 & died in 1988 at 58. Bruce Weber's doc on him, "Let's Get Lost" (1988), is sublime. Baker's severe heroin addiction led to arrests for drug possession, forging prescriptions, etc. Also, did he fall, jump, or was he pushed?

HBD ruminative hunk Jake Gyllenahaal, BOTD in 1980, turning 45 today. Richard Kelly's "Donnie Darko" (2001) remains my fave movie of his (the original, not the disastrous director's cut). He also makes a hot Santa in Sam Mendes' "Jarhead" (2005). Merry Xmas!
