AWS outage is “a striking example of how infrastructure consolidation makes the modern internet vulnerable to a failure by a single major provider”

Amazon's AWS Goes Down, Takes Out "Half of the Internet"
Apps and platforms relying on AWS were in a jam after an hours-long outage took down a sizable chunk of the world's internet.

Represented @turkopticon.bsky.social with @kristap.bsky.social & @autobotcoop.bsky.social at #CircuitBreakers2025, talking about the real-world challenges of worker-run organizing & how much we’ve learned (sometimes the hard way).

Organizing is tough, but community and honesty make it possible.

Despite making critical contributions to the booming AI industry, data workers often report that they aren’t treated like the skilled, valuable workers that they are.

So, from @alphabetworkersunion.org to @turkopticon.bsky.social, data workers are organizing for better pay and working conditions.

Two decades later, the label of AI still hides a world of interconnected workers in the U.S. and abroad who keep the magic going. That's why ee collaborated with @alphabetworkersunion.org to investigate what conditions they’re working under.

The future of AI is being built on the backs of underpaid workers with no protections. I shared my story in this new report because silence keeps us invisible. #HumansMakeAI #DataWorkersUnite #InvisibleLabor
NEW RESEARCH ALERT 🚨

Tech giants are making massive investments in generative AI, integrating it into their existing products and selling access to the foundational models to others.

But all that money and power isn’t making its way down to the people who make AI actually work: data workers.

Michigan Republicans just passed a bill showing they are more concerned about what school bathroom children are using than whether or not their school has enough money to keep the bathroom lights on. #mileg

It's crazy how some people will lie and pretend to be something they’re not just to get ahead. Fake it till you make it is one thing, but doing it at the expense of others is a whole other level. #KeepItReal #IntegrityMatters #BeYourself

Covert narcissist coworkers are wild.
One minute they're sweetly offering to “support you,”
The next, they’re spinning your work as their own and making you look “difficult.”
Quiet sabotage is still sabotage.

The U.S. Department of Education’s decision to rescind $42M in approved COVID relief is a stunning betrayal of Michigan’s students.
This move abandons vulnerable communities and undermines trust in federal commitments.

Does anyone know a good resource for obtaining old booking photos (mugshots) in Michigan, when the original booking location no longer has the photo?

The Department of Education is (was?) responsible for:

✅Distributing & monitoring spending for special-ed & low-income students;
✅Facilitating postsecondary financial aid; &
✅Civil rights enforcement

Impossible to see how dismantling it will do anything but hurt kids & students.

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:
