Our radar is picking up birds 🐦roosting this morning denoted by light blue circles in eastern Ohio. This is common in the mid to late summer.

I made a collection of bird ornaments, each one representing a species we can spot from our home, at the public pond out front and the birds in our backyard. I created them to celebrate this place where I finally feel at home and to enjoy making something crafty just for me again. :D

Had a blast at #WOS2025 talking birds and catching up with great people. But my favorite part was seeing superstar Oswego undergrad Griffin Kutny mixing it up at his first conference! He had great things to say about the welcoming atmosphere at @wilsonornithsoc.bsky.social and the Flocks project.

You can’t understand bird declines without also understanding insect declines.

Grateful our work on insect-bird interactions was highlighted by Smithsonian Mag. If you love birds, think about whether your actions are helping the insects they need to survive.

Scientists Are Tracking Worrying Declines in Insects—and the Birds That Feast on Them. Here's What's Being Done to Save Them Both
In Vermont, researchers have investigated the types of creepy, crawly bugs that their avian predators consume and may have found the answers to keeping them both alive

WOS member Andrew Dreelin's research on prairie dogs and curlews was recently featured on the NPR podcast Short Wave. #ornithology
Why eavesdropping on prairie dogs pays off for this bird : Short Wave
Why did the ornithologist strap a taxidermy badger to a remote controlled car and drive it around the prairie? To interrogate the secret world of animal eavesdropping in the grasslands, of course!…

@evornithology.bsky.social Talks about a (social media inspired) study on mating preferences in Black Terns. Males are subtly, but still significantly, darker than females - and the birds can tell the difference! More black/saturated birds also pair with more gray/unsaturated birds #WOS2025

So excited to share this paper, lead-authored by newly-minted Dr. Andrew Dreelin from my lab and @andyjboyce.bsky.social's with you all! 🧪

There's this paradox about prairie dog towns - many birds seem to love them, but they attract a lot of predators.
