While working on my novel “La Maupin, Mistress of the Sword”, I came upon a lovely little tale—what you might call a “transgender love story”, first published in 1695. To oversimplify, in it a physiological male, raised to believe he is a girl falls in love with a boy who cross-dresses as a girl. 1/

How real are the sensational stories told about La Maupin? It’s hard to know. Legends grow up around her. But this one is the most likely & her most inglorious.

My novel, "La Maupin, Mistress of the Sword", opens with a teaser, an action scene between 2 characters, but the next chapter starts out 8 years earlier and it takes 9 chapters to get back here. So "Prologue"? "Chapter 1"? Something else?
