“Every Book Is About The Same Thing, (2022) was largely inspired by this page from the children’s book “The Color Kittens” by Margaret Wise Brown. I had been reading it to one of my students every morning, and I fell in love.

“Night’s Brim,” (2022)

A painting of a dear friend’s daughter, exhibited at Miami Art Basel. I continued using the visual idea of a window frame as a marker between flattened interior and exterior, with the outside world pressing up against the room.

“Dwelling,” (2022).

This is still one of my favorite paintings. There are a lot of details I love, like the striped pants and handprint pillows (gifted by a fellow teacher). I find myself returning often to this color palette, too.

Joseph Yoakum, a Black and Native American artist who began drawing landscapes at age 76, blending his memories with imagined mountains and streams, has influenced my work since the very beginning. Yoakum’s mountains show up in many of the paintings in my 2022 show.

A section of the poem “Didn't You Ever Search For Another Star?” by Alfred Starr Hamilton, from the book of poems that inspired my 2022 show “And I Was A Stranger.”

Another painting from my 2022 AL show, “Sedge Twilight” (60x48”).

Here I continued to experiment with the images in the background that can read as windows or hung paintings, a flattening that forces the viewer to question what is real in the space and what is imagined.

Another painting (“A Halo and the Purple and the Gold,” 2022) from my show “And I Was A Stranger” at Scott Miller Projects.

Joseph Yoakum’s mountains appear throughout the show. Mountains have many meanings for me— a symbol of endurance and growth, connectedness to nature, solitude, safety.

“I Held This Little Light To Myself” (2022).

This was the first painting I made for my solo show at Scott Miller Projects in Birmingham, AL.

I was reading poems by Alfred Starr Hamilton at the time, and all of the paintings are titled after his words.

“Double Window”. 50x72”. 2022.

The paintings that came after the storm paintings all have the same idea— a threatening external world pressed up against a safe interior space.
Growing up in Christian fundamentalism, there was a constant threat of the world coming to an end that has stayed with me.

“Mackerel Sky,” (2021)

When I first started making paintings in 2020, I was having a recurring dream. Over and over I was swept up in a tornado while inside an old, broken down house. In the dream, the sky was so beautiful that I couldn’t look away.

“Whitson at 5:20 AM,” (2021).

I photographed Whitson for this painting after being up all night. I had found out that my partner at the time had betrayed me in innumerable ways. I was completely terrified. Luckily I was not alone, and Whitson and I photographed each other after a night walk.

It’s my fifth year of painting, so I am going to start posting all of the paintings I’ve made since starting my painting practice.

I’ll include stories about each one (as much as I can remember), beginning with the oldest works.

This month I truly feel like I’m starting from the beginning again.
