The Silver Palace. 48x60”.

A painting I finished at the end of June. The reference image is from a toy paper theater set for a play that takes place on Mount Etna.

“Every Book Is About The Same Thing, (2022) was largely inspired by this page from the children’s book “The Color Kittens” by Margaret Wise Brown. I had been reading it to one of my students every morning, and I fell in love.

“Night’s Brim,” (2022)

A painting of a dear friend’s daughter, exhibited at Miami Art Basel. I continued using the visual idea of a window frame as a marker between flattened interior and exterior, with the outside world pressing up against the room.

“Dwelling,” (2022).

This is still one of my favorite paintings. There are a lot of details I love, like the striped pants and handprint pillows (gifted by a fellow teacher). I find myself returning often to this color palette, too.

Joseph Yoakum, a Black and Native American artist who began drawing landscapes at age 76, blending his memories with imagined mountains and streams, has influenced my work since the very beginning. Yoakum’s mountains show up in many of the paintings in my 2022 show.
