Incredible footage!
Today is the first ever UN World Day for Glaciers so it feels appropriate to highlight the cutting edge research within IoSS in this area. Work conducted last week collecting radar data on the Hofsjökull ice cap in Iceland as is a great example of this.
Back to civilisation after another great field campaign to Hofsjökull with the DRUMICE project. We managed to collect over 100km of radar lines over the 2 and a half day weather window. Will put together this quick little video. Thanks to NERC UK-Iceland collaboration grant for making this happen!

Poverty can present different challenges and outcomes for girls and boys, with girls being particularly disadvantaged. In this blog, Joseph Mwita Kisito reflects on gender pressure and poverty across the life course, pointing towards responsive policy-based solutions.
Enduring Hardships: The Life-Course Journey of Women in Kenyan Resource-Poor Urban Neighbourhoods
Written by Joseph Mwita Kisito. Empirical research has shown that, from socio-economic and cultural perspectives, poverty often presents different outcomes for girls and boys, with girls being particularly disadvantaged, not only in the present but across generations. In this blog, Joseph reflects on gender pressure and poverty across the life course and points towards gender-responsive policies that address these issues.

6% of adults attended elite fee paying schools, yet disproportionately high n’s are on most important decision making bodies in UK society.

Today we mark a shift from 1/2 of Tory Cabinet from fee paying schools to 0 in today’s Labour cabinet.

This is a remarkable moment, whatever your politics.
A remarkable stat: Heidi Alexander’s appointment as Transport Secretary means the cabinet is now 100% state-educated for the first time in history.

Good thread in Louise Hague resignation.
My tuppence on Louise Haigh. Speaking as someone who has worked in the probation service and academic criminology, we should be encouraging people with criminal convictions to declare these and seek work. You may not know that 1:3 men in the UK has a past conviction 1/3
