I have a new piece at Bright Lights Film Journal on Romero's Day of the Dead as a woman's nightmare and the film's critique of hyper-masculinity. This essay was born out of a conference presentation. I'm happy it found a good home!

Instead of a shape-shifting alien that overtakes its human hosts, capitalism is represented in Romero’s film by the military and to a lesser extent, the zombies. Zombies have long been[...]

Listen to the union. It's a popular tactic for customers to boycott a company as a means of solidarity to a union, but the union may not call for that as a means of applying further pressure to executives.

Listen to the union. If you do enjoy Starbucks, that is how you can best help out.
BREAKING: Starbucks workers have just authorized a massive strike.

Union Starbucks baristas voted to authorize the strike by 92%.

Now baristas in over 25 cities could launch an unfair labor practice strike on Thursday, November 13th.

It's cool they're doing a Gremlins 3, but it's a bummer Joe Dante won't return to direct. It's also unclear if Zach Galligan will return as Billy, though I assume he will in some capacity. I think Phoebe Cates retired from acting.

Whew. Proud of my state tonight. This was a major race that didn't get a ton of media attention.
BREAKING: Pennsylvania voters approve to retain three state Supreme Court justices, NBC News projects, preserving Democrats’ 5-2 majority on the state’s high court.

To add to this article, Mamdani has been so successful, I think, because he's based nearly his entire campaign on affordability- affordable housing, affordable public transit, etc. I'm also aware that he's running in NYC, not a purple state, but there's a lot that can be learned from his campaign.
"There’s real fear that Mamdani will help inspire young people across the country to believe they have the power to dislodge the aging, out-of-touch leadership of the current Democratic Party."

Not just in New York — Mamdani's campaign shows how to inspire voters nationwide

Despite an extremely windy Halloween, we still had about 100 costumed kiddos show up at the door and gave away a lot of the candy. Thankfully, most of our outdoor decorations survived. We only had one casualty- a small plastic tombstone that snapped. I hope everyone had a great Halloween.

My Horror Literature and Film class is about to start the body horror unit, which I added to the syllabus this semester. On tap for the next few weeks: some of Clive Barker's short stories, Carmen Maria Machado's story "The Husband Stitch," The Substance, and a dash of David Cronenberg. Can't wait!

To my friends who also live in PA: please make sure to vote YES on judicial retention next Tuesday. It's really crucial we keep the state Supreme Court in safe hands. Abortion access, fair elections, and LGBTQ rights are at stake.

Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein looks gorgeous and really deserves a wider theatrical release. Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth are both really good, but Jacob Elordi's Monster carries much of the film. I need to sit with this one for a while yet, I think.
