Amazing to sit down with a person who taught me so much, including sticking to your principles!
On this weeks episode Brendan sits down with Ian Smith, a professional geomorphologist that is now doing his PhD at the age of 62 at the University of Toronto! Ian will be working on incorporating principles of naturalized channel design to benefit native species in Ontario. 1/3

This may be appealing to some of our followers: a fish themed version of the popular game Wingspan.
We're excited today to announce Finspan, the slightly lighter cousin to Wingspan! Finspan features a familiar structure to Wingspan but with a number of new mechanisms built around the aquatic theme. It'll launch on January 22 on our webstore and ship in the weeks that follow!

Introducing the first new #lamprey genus in over a century! "Lampetra" brook and river lampreys in western North America now belong to the genus Occidentis. @davidmoscrop.com sad about the pod being done (got through 70 percent of the recent episode so apologies if I missed a big reveal about what's next!). Have you read Tyrant by Stephen Greenbalt? The conversation today had me thinking about the takeaways from that book re: avoiding middle ground

Had a great conversation today about AI in ecology and generally. It will be on @fisheriespod.bsky.social in a few weeks. Probably one too many Dune references but I won't apologize for that!

Anyone have experience with organizing trail camera into a database? Looking at a project where we'll have 5+ cameras taking hundreds of pictures a day. Data will be beamed to a single location OR data will be manually downloaded and then put into the database.

All I can say is wow. Feeling there's gonna be lots of Hg checks on local walleye populations in my neck of the woods soon.

Another unexpected interaction that invasive species have with the ecosystems they disrupt.
Invasive zebra mussels can alter mercury concentrations in fish, by altering fish foraging patterns and promoting microbial communities capable of methylating inorganic mercury. Fish tissue Hg was 72%–157% higher in lakes with zebra mussels. #bioinvasions

Managed to get a stream of consciousness out on the long drive back to Canada. The dichotomy on the west versus the East when it comes to watercraft inspections is so interesting. A Geographic and geopolitical situation to say the least!

Meeting a with the computer science Dean at University of Manitoba next week to talk about a project.

Nothing like a good old cross discipline project to get the creative juices flowing. We'll hopefully get to share more about it if it works out! And maybe even if it doesn't!

Finished Sand County Almanac and regretting that it took me this long to get to. What a book. Making me want to move out of the city and buy a hobby farm asap.

I think if I read it before Silent Spring instead of after I'd be in wildlife management right now.
