Brenda Dacres, Directly Elected Mayor of the London Borough of Lewisham (Labour and Co-operative Party). Vice Chair of Central London Forward. Member (Labour) of LGA Public Sector Reform Board. Chair of London Council Transport & Environment Committee.

One year as Mayor of #Lewisham. Elected on International Women’s Day 2024 a day celebrating women’s power & progress.

This year’s theme #AccelerateAction reminds us to keep driving change. I hope to lead by example, showing women & girls they can achieve anything. Let’s keep pushing forward.
London faces a choice: the politics of protest, or the politics of progress.

We’re building homes. Others are blocking them.

My op-ed in @thelondonstandard.bsky.social
on why Lewisham, @london.gov.uk and our #Labour government are up for the fight.
‘Just as Lewisham reached the point of turning years of consultation into meaningful change, Jeremy Corbyn swept into the borough at the eleventh hour’
London has to choose homes over protest

It was a pleasure to attend last night’s Black History Month celebration and hear from Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy.

Inspiring to meet so many remarkable people, including André who has passed his Bar exams, secured pupillage and like me, is a proud member of Middle Temple.

Great news for renters. The Renters’ Rights Bill is now in place, giving tenants stronger protections, fairer terms and more security in their homes. A big step forward for housing justice and dignity for all renters.

London boroughs drive growth, tackle poverty and provide vital services.

However, their ability to do that is under threat from the Fair Funding Review, which could cut council spending by £700m.

Read CLF Chair @adamhug.bsky.social on the impact this would have here ⬇️
'London's streets aren't paved with gold. Cuts would hit the poorest the hardest' - LabourList
Any changes that result in a further reduction in funding for deprived boroughs risks deepening inequality.

It’s also a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health

Let’s keep breaking the stigma & build a world where everyone feels supported, valued & heard

The attack on a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar is horrific.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the Jewish community.

We must always stand united against antisemitism and all forms of hatred.

Great news for London 🌍💚

For the first time ever, air quality across our city is within legal limits.

Back in 2016, experts said it would take 193 years, but thanks to collective action and the leadership of @london.gov.uk we’ve achieved it in just 9.

A huge win for Londoners 👏🏽

#CleanAir #ULEZ
I remember being told that it would take 193 years to reach legal limits for nitrogen dioxide.

I decided this was unacceptable.

Thanks to the bold policies we put in place, we've managed to do it in nine years - 184 years earlier than expected.

Fantastic to have been at the launch with @london.gov.uk and now see it whizzing past Goldsmiths University in New Cross.

The new Bakerloop express electric bus from Waterloo to Lewisham gives Londoners better connections and shows the benefits a Bakerloo line extension could bring.

Free to use in its first week, its a quicker, greener and more convenient service to transform everyday journeys.
