Native Houstonian with complicated feelings about TX. I love my family (obvs), Jesus, public schools, and the Astros.
Me, last spring: yay! Both my kids got into their dream schools, and they’re schools that seem to largely avoid the political fray!
Donald Trump: hold my beer!
Mike Miles: No, hold my beer!

Distracting? Isn’t the point to catch drivers’ attention before they blow through the red light at 45mph?

As a frequent Houston pedestrian, I suggest we paint ALL the crosswalks rainbow colors.

It was a good mail day. The book is here! And the cover design may well be the best part.

Things in HISD continue to get worse. The decline in enrollment was steeper than expected, so some schools are seeing painful mid-year budget cuts. I have friends whose kids lost incredible teachers and valuable programs this week. The Houston business community continues to endorse this.

I do not, under any circumstances, want Elon Musk digging a tunnel under my house. He can start with Wesley Hunt’s neighborhood.

Fact check: Why Elon Musk's remarks about Houston flood tunnels are misleading
Elon Musk said his proposal to build tunnels to address Houston’s flooding woes would work, after a Chronicle investigation raised questions about the plan’s effectiveness.

Daughter leaves in less than 24 hours.

“Mom, if you start to miss me too much and want to be glad I’m leaving, just look in that lunch kit on my desk.”

“How old is the food in it, child?”

“Since my second week working at the museum.”

(That’s two months ago. Still sad about her leaving though.)

Took our daughter to see the Astros one more time before she heads off to Boston and we chose an excellent game because it was both a win and a game to make you swear off baseball for a few years.

Teared up multiple times during high school orientation. This does not bode well for the college drop off in a couple weeks.

To be fair, a performing arts high school probably has a more emotional orientation than most.

Still, 😭 😭 😭

I need to schedule a time for my family to have dinner or coffee or something with my parents so my daughter can tell them good bye before she leaves for college but every time I open my calendar it’s all blurry. This is surely a problem with Google calendar and not my feelings, right? 😭

A few months ago Fubo raised our monthly rate more than a third. So I cancelled it and set up a recurring donation to NPR instead. The only thing I miss is watching the Astros, but I like listening to Robert Ford anyway.
scoop: donations to NPR and PBS stations have exploded, with donors across the country giving in unprecedented numbers since Congress cut federal funding

The Harlem Renaissance lesson made me mad for a number of reasons but I want to be clear that my son came home pretty regularly complaining about AI slop and mistakes in his lessons, which his teacher definitely didn’t feel she had any choice in teaching. The HR lesson was just one of many.

We're professors. We're parents. HISD students don't deserve AI slop.
Two Rice professors say that the monstrous faces in an AI-generated lesson on the Harlem Renaissance are symbols of a state takeover gone wrong.

Time is running out to fund our public schools!Use this link to email your reps.
In April, the House passed a broad school funding bill that included new flexible school dollars. The Senate focused its efforts this session on creating a new permanent allotment to support statewide teacher pay raises. The truth is, we need both.
