Outside: 10F, snow everywhere, sidewalk ice

Waitperson completely deadpan: spring is right around the corner

Tables in earshot: grim snickering

[looks at the "flurries, no accumulation" forecast]

[looks out at the mild white-out going on outside]

[shoves the charged battery back into the snow blower]

This fucking winter.

It's not that it's snowing heavily, here. It's very fine snow, just sifting down. But it's been sifting down for going on 20 fucking hours, at this point.

You know, I love hearing about what a great manager and leader I am, but after a certain point I also really, seriously have to wonder what the everloving _fuck_ most managers are doing that I'm such a shining contrast.

Who the fuck thought vertebrae were a good idea? This post brought to you by C1 going out last night and getting to play "is my body trying to throw up because the pain is at 'evacuate all passengers' level or because of nerve bullshit?" Embodiment was a mistake.

In today's local coffee place exploration: Dunkin has quite reasonable lattes, decent filled mini bagels, and acceptable donuts, but their "croissants" are a crime against humanity.

Osanyin's motto: all your catnip are belong to me.

Shit is on fire, but my 14th un-anniversary scarf arrived, and it's beautiful. Am I going to build a whole masquerade ensemble around it? You bet I am.

Wholly unrelated, can vouch for Upeckaroo brass emergency whistles. Very loud for a keychain whistle.

I do love me a job where they pay for things like financial advice for you. 500 extra a month into the mortgage it is, and someone else did the math and explained it. Win.

It continues to Michigan out, vigorously, so we're on to freezing fog, which means most surface ice is gone but my hair may never be the same, because umbrellas do absolute bupkis in this.
January 6, 2026 at 8:51 PM
It is currently freezing rain _and_ warming up, so there's black ice on every flat surface plus fog. Basically, outdoors is the pits of hell right now, and it's the most Michigan "welcome to the new term" imaginable.
January 6, 2026 at 3:23 PM
Just got an email from my local PBS to all donors, saying basically "we did it, we live on, thank you everyone, and fuck the govvy".

Excuse me, I now have to go get some kleenex.

New Year's Day has progressed in the traditional way of my people: with chili and homemade tortillas, and also bubbly. I don't do the cork shooting contests by myself, but I _did_ snowblow half a block of sidewalk, which I figure is in the right spirit.
January 2, 2026 at 12:02 AM
New recommended New Year's tradition: come home and watch a decade of collected Sydney New Year fireworks videos (which can be found on youtube) while drinking tiny pink cans of champagne.

Went to the vinology blind wine tasting, met a lovely family, am so drunk. Now for black pearl for dinner and mocktails to sober up for the drive home.
January 1, 2026 at 1:31 AM
It is dark and rainy, and I have nothing I have to get done, therefore I am spending the day in my bathrobe, watching incredibly undemanding camping anime and eating salt bagels for every meal. Yay vacation.

I have survived hosting Christmas Day, including trumper aunt, and I didn't kill _anyone_. Please clap.
December 25, 2025 at 10:29 PM
House is clean, food is ready, C1 that little fucker has been shoved back in place so migraine is subsiding, and we are chilling on the couch while waiting for family to descend.
December 25, 2025 at 5:42 PM
Behold the tally of Entertainment Shit Done and Still To Be Done, because I am hosting Christmas Day and this is all necessary to avoid Concerned Relatives Concern Trolling.

[hums for pitch before singing] On the evening of solstice, my true love gave to me... a proper winter sacrifice.
December 21, 2025 at 11:02 PM
Okay, my last stocking stuffer (the rosemary tequila) is finished before solstice, so I feel I'm doing very well this year.
December 21, 2025 at 5:21 PM
Important question, bsky peeps: if I'm going to a 'blind' wine tasting event with a theme of "masquerade" and I'm probably wearing black with a black and gold butterfly wrap, should I wear:

Classic venetian-esque mask: www.etsy.com/listing/1900...

Gold cut metal mask: www.etsy.com/listing/1855...

Okay, it is quitting time, I am ON VACATION until the new year, therefore it's time for a french 75.

[toasts the internet]

In things I have said, today, apropos of approaching NYE: "Do I not have a sparkly silver purse already? That's a tragedy."

Ursula LeGuin's essay collection _Dancing on the Edge of the World_.
Pratchett. Either Night Watch or Carpe Jugulum.
omg. Kat Abughazaleh just posted that if she's elected, she'll swear in on a copy of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

If you were elected to public office (never mind whether you'd ever actually run), what book would you swear in on?
