Author is using 面々 so much in this volume after never using it before, which leads me to believe they only just learned the word and are pleased with how smart they think it makes them sound. #AmTranslating

I've found this to be true for the translation industry too. Making friends and supporting each other (building a network of amazing people) can open potential doors, but it takes years to build up those relationships.

Fellow translators aren't competition, they're colleagues and friends.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

Thinking again about two of the best panels to ever grace the pages of a manga. The title of the book is hilarious all on its own, but Kei-chan’s studious/serious look and the pacing are *chef's kiss*

Honestly surprised that this manga doesn't already exist (rom-com retelling of Urashima Taro with a yakuza as Urashima who falls in love with a mermaid in the dragon palace, wackiness ensues)

Finally made it over to the new @popotame.bsky.social, and the space is amazing! So much light, gallery bigger than their old space. The current exhibit is one of my faves, Nakada Ikumi! I wish people let her do more manga. She's really good at capturing little moments, my fave kind of story.

Oh no... 魚喃キリコ was such a great talent. So insightful, revealing hidden truths in her characters and their relationships, bringing new depths to josei manga. Her work is visual poetry. I'm sorry she'll never create any more of it, but grateful she left such amazing manga for us to read and re-read.
Blue and Strawberry Shortcakes manga creator Kiriko Nananan died a year ago at age 52. Her death was revealed one year later at the wishes of her and her family.

Me on my first draft: I don't have time for this blackboard full of scribbled handwriting now. I'll do it later.
Me on my second draft, seeing a panel marked "later": Oh no... #AmTranslating

My friends got me a determined and yet somehow slightly menacing birthday present.

Interesting that in Japanese you’re not wearing a thread (一糸もまとわず) while in English, it’s a stitch. It’s like we’re looking at different parts of the clothing production process when we talk about nakedness. #AmTranslating

Japanese homonyms mess with my brain in the weirdest way. Reading about planetary satellites, I immediately start thinking about hygiene. The cleanest little moons!

Everyone loves my punny translation baby!
Got my copy of Stop! Hibari-kun Volume 1 last night. Shout out to @brainvsbook.bsky.social for an excellent translation so far. So much of this series is non-sequiturs and tortured puns and this really does a good job with them.

Not turning into a denki carpet stan account, but I must occasionally preach the gospel of the tiny hot mat on the floor. This world is often terrible, but your feet can be so cosy and warm for a couple thousand yen. A mere pittance for the smallest and most pleasurable of joys!
I got a mini denki carpet today, and I can already say it has changed my life. My feet! So warm! My uninsulated Japanese apartment will not freeze me solid this winter!

Netflix is advertising Ten Dance during 金ロー, which is both cool and baffling. Who is watching a family friendly film (Home Alone in tonight's case) and also in the market to watch sexy dancing men sexy dance together?

Wait. It's me. I'm the 金ロー watching target audience.

I have perhaps loved nothing more than a heated Tokyo toilet seat on a cold winter night.

(Also, doesn't really need to be said, and yet it does: don't forget that any light novel or manga publisher [no matter what country they are based in] trying to implement a machine post-editing translation workflow is just as gross. bsky.app/profile/apol...)
You just know they're pulling this garbage with Harlequin first bc they have zero respect for romance as a literary genre. Extremely gross move in many ways.
French publishing house Harlequin decided to use AI translation instead of human translations.

All their freelance translators (some of whom had been working with Harlequin for +30y!!!) were told they would no longer receive work from Harlequin

If they want to keep getting work, they can review (=rewrite) the AI slop, for 1/3 of their normal rate (which was already low to begin with)

Readers, we HAVE to complain about it, hold the publishers accountable and boycott these books
