2025 MOVIE THEATER THREAD: I saw a deranged number of movies theatrically this year and this is an ongoing thread of some memories and observations about ALL of them

Now rewatching The Fifth Element. Haven't seen this in years. The case says it's the 20th anniversary edition, but this movie came out in 1997 so that's already pretty out of date

HE WAS NO HERO

I'm already seeing people jump to conclusions about this movie based entirely on the poster. I know as much about it as you do, but I think it's fairly unlikely that the director of Pig is simply making a movie about how the Sheriff of Nottingham was actually the good guy

Wait, that Grok stuff is still happening? Why did I assume they shut that down as soon as possible? Am I a fool? That's just not the world we live in. I should know better.

I wonder if there is a couple somewhere whose meet-cute is when their butts touched at the corner urinals

Pretty sure this was the only computer game I ever bought from Jack in the Box

That was a pleasant surprise! We Bury the Dead explores themes you've seen in plenty of other zombie movies, but the zombies here provoke pity more often than fear. It's a novel approach to some heavily covered ground. I also appreciated that everything is America's fault

Now seated (way too early) for We Bury the Dead. A zombie movie quietly released in early January is a dicey proposition, but this sounds intriguing and people I generally trust said they liked it

You can walk into a Barnes and Noble and pick up a Jean Rollin movie. Nature is healing.

What if I went and got sushi and then went to a movie? That sounds good, right? I think I'm going to do that

Ethan Coen and Benny Safdie should direct a movie together
64. Honey Don't! : Ethan Coen should probably give his brother a call. I defended Drive Away Dolls as a fun trifle, but I'm not sure about this one. Even though this is teeming with good actors, the material is so thin that they can't do a lot with it. Chris Evans' character is particularly weak.

Parts of King Kong were definitely directed by the guy who made the Hobbit trilogy but I still like it anyway

Hey, remember back when Jack Black did things other than that one thing he does?
Now watching Peter Jackson's King Kong. I don't think I've seen this since the theatrical run, but I did play that XBox 360 game back then so I guess that counts as my second viewing

Finished this today and it was pretty unremarkable outside of the killer's weird motive. It's slow paced and talky and not nearly as stylish as I usually expect from the genre. I did think it was kind of funny how every woman in the movie recently found out she's pregnant

Felt like shit this morning and needed to get out of my own head so I went and did the exact same thing I did yesterday. It helped? I guess?

Now watching 5 Women For The Killer (1974). Personally I don't think the killer should have ANY women. Haven't watched a giallo for awhile so I'm looking forward to this

I'm having a little "Blu-rays I bought a long time ago but never watched for some reason" film festival

I can't believe we still haven't gotten a Salt vs Lucy movie where Atomic Blonde steps out of a portal in the post credit scene
January 3, 2026 at 12:26 AM
Angelina Jolie is perfect for something like this, but Salt sure doesn't do much to distinguish itself. I feel like I've seen all of these story beats in other spy movies. It's very dumb and earnestly dramatic in a way that reminded me a little of how kids might play pretend spies

Now watching Salt (2010). I bought this Blu-ray for 3 dollars from Goodwill several years ago, but I haven't watched it yet because my doctor wants me to reduce my sodium intake hahahahahahaha hahahahaha
