A frame of bees during spring inspections. It’s laid beautifully by their Queen. With capped brood in the middle, then nectar, bee bread and capped honey around it. It looks like a bee rainbow. This is perfection for beekeepers. All is well in this hive.

I’m enjoying putting my feet up and having some relaxation time. During spring/summer it’s non stop being a beekeeper. Hive inspections and rescuing swarms.
This is me in my beige bee suit gently scooping up bees with my hands. They have swarmed into a tree. There’s probably around 20,000 bees all huddled together looking for a new home A honey bee swarm with around 20,000 bees in it. They have settled in the bows of an apple tree.

In the glamorous world of beekeeping it important to take care of your back. Some of those supers of honey can weigh up to 20kg. So lifting them from hives that are above your head down to the floor and back up again is tough work… actually it’s not glamorous at all! #beekeeper #rawhoney

Can you see that round white blob with a tiny little larva in it? That’s the start of a queen bee. The white blob is royal jelly and she’s sat in a queen cup. This will be built into a long queen cell. They ‘usually’ found built below brood frames, but not always. #beekeeper #queenbee #nature #hive

It’s a cold but sunny day today. My bees will probably pop out for cleansing flights, (that’s a polite way of saying they will leave the hive to have a poo) bees don’t poo in hives ever! Only the queen does, and that gets cleaned up straightaway by her attendants.
A fury honey bee sits on my hand. She is drinking a droplet of sugar water. This is to give her the energy to fly back home to her hive, she got caught out by winters changing temperatures. She is ever so cute, with her massive black eyes cautiously looking around. She drinks the sugar water using her tongue which is pretty much like a big drinking straw.

I made a new product yesterday. Basically I was in my loft bringing down the Christmas decorations when I found a pair of old boots. I used to wear them all the time. Anyway.. the leather was crispy and faded so I made a beeswax conditioner and they are back baby!!
Old faded brown boot that’s definitely seen better days. The leather is faded and crispy. After I put my homemade leather conditioner on it it looks fabulous again. The leather is supple and shiny they don’t look new, but they look great! 7 round silver tins sit on a wooden table. The centre tin is open and you can see the bright yellow polish. The tins are positioned to look like a daisy. A comparison of the boots, they are laid out on a piece of brown hessian sack. One boot without the conditioner and one afterwards. There’s a very big difference between them.

This is a picture of me, I’m Vicki a middle aged lady in a full bee suit. It’s beige coloured. There’s hives in the background which are pale blue. Some are individually painted with flowers, hearts and fruit. I’m not a great painter but I try my best. I like to make my bees feel at home.
