The US military has enough to occupy just Southern California which is 1.5% of the land mass of the Contiguous US and 7% of the population.

Even within states like Washington and Oregon, the rural areas get mad that their tax dollars are going to fund projects in Portland or Seattle. They have to be constantly reminded that it's the tax revenue from those big cities that fund everything THEY take for granted.
