The ESA protects wildlife and its habitat by preventing illegal “Take“, a legal word meaning “harass, harm, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture or collect or attempt to engage in any such conduct“ except by federal permit. Removing HARM protection will increase their greatest threat: habitat loss.
The Endangered Species Act has protected species and their habitats for over 50 years. A single word change could significantly alter the way the law is implemented. The only beneficiaries of this plan are extractive industries. 🌎 by @morgansjogren.bsky.social

PEER’s Executive Director is Tim Whitehouse, a former senior enforcement attorney with the U.S. EPA. PEER argues that the Congressional Review Act (CRA) stipulates that an agency action of this type must be submitted to Congress before it can take effect and Congress can move to block it 🌎
Today, PEER sent a letter to Congress warning that the Department of the Interior’s abrupt halt of offshore wind projects already under construction is not legally defensible and raises serious conflict of interest concerns.

Gold Butte absolutely deserved National Monument status to help protect it , including from illegal cattle grazing by Cliven Bundy which is still unfortunately going on.

Just look at all the petroglyphs.

The Colorado River is in crisis due to climate change, worsening regional drought conditions, and reducing the amount of water entering the river basin. The extreme water level drop at the Lake Mead reservoir can be seen in these two photographs from 1999 and 2010 🌎

Bob and I were among the hundreds of researchers that were supposed to conduct the 6th U.S. National Climate Assessment. Now it looks like they're gonna produce it with a few people and Grok? Communities need rigorous and accurate information about climate change. This will put communities at risk.

I look forward to the legally required, transparent peer review process required by the US Global Change Research Act and the Information Quality Act. I always thought they would try to do a NCA with Judith Curry, five old men and a LLM.
It’s the gold standard of US climate research. Contrarians could write the next one.
Researchers who have downplayed the threat of global warming have been asked to author the next National Climate Assessment.

Agree w/ the Center for Biological Diversity, calling this review “insidious.”
FWS has fired science experts and undermined the agency. The review is to “look for refuges or hatcheries established for a purpose that no longer aligns with the mission”, and close them. 🧵

This is not just "NCAR boosterism," folks. There are multiple empirical measures by which this is correct--and also, if you took a random sampling of atmospheric & Earth scientists from around the world, I'd bet that a substantial majority of them would agree. NCAR is truly irreplaceable.
Bucalacchi stresses NCAR's reach is unique globally: "if you look at the totality of activities from weather, water, climate, space, weather, atmosphere, chemistry- no one single institution covers that breadth and depth of across observation, high performance computing and modelling and tradition."

NSF is about to dismantle NCAR at Russell Vought's direction to protect the fossil fuel industry. It's hard to communicate just how much NCAR does, so let's take a look: I've never worked at NCAR, and I've worked with NCAR researchers once ever. What scientific discoveries has NCAR made possible? 👇

This gutting of peer review is very likely driven by Project 2025/OMB/Vought, very likely is about funding junk science, and very likely is coming for #NIH and biomedical research next.
