White-knuckling the crash landing into Trump’s authoritarian dystopia

I was at a shitty crustpunk bar once getting an after-work beer. One of those shitholes where the bartenders clearly hate you. So the bartender and I were ignoring one another when someone sits next to me and he immediately says, "no. get out."

This is terrifying!

ICE breaks into this woman’s car in the pick-up line at West Loop Elementary school in Chicago and detains her before she can pick her kids up from school. (They were eventually let go after showing their documents)

This is Trump’s America.

The president just gathered the highest ranking officers in the military to tell them that he may order them to kill American citizens -- and that they better follow his orders. All in response to a series of crises that have no basis in reality.

I don't know how to yell any louder.

Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.

These deaths are a real feather in the cap of Brian Kilmeade and Fox News.
FOX news host suggests we euthanize the homeless, someone goes into two encampments and starts shooting.

13 people shot and Jacob Frey and the media are just talking about it as the new best reason to clear the encampments
'We're shutting this thing down': 8 shot at Minneapolis homeless encampment hosted by landlord, Frey pledges action
That shooting came less than 12 hours after another shooting just two miles away that left five others injured.

We're witnessing the most aggressive, fanatical crackdown on free speech in my lifetime. The speed and breadth of government censorship and private sector and nonprofit capitulation has been astonishing. As has the lack of urgency/silence from people who've long claimed to care about this stuff.

Karen Attiah’s firing is outrageous. I’ve not always agreed with her but always respected her passion and courage. Once again I wonder why I still subscribe to a paper I loved and wrote for now that Jeff Bezos and his craven underlings have gutted it

There’s no evidence that any leftist group or network had anything to do with Kirk’s murder. Even Cox said he acted alone.

They’re going to try to claim the people who celebrated his death or ridiculed him are supporting terrorism, map out any groups they’re affiliated with, and work backward.
Stephen Miller: “We are gonna channel all the anger we have over the organized campaign to led to this assassination to uproot & dismantle these terrorist networks … we are going to use every resource we have at the DOJ, Homeland Security & throughout this govt to dismantle & destroy these networks"

Kirk didn't serve in the military or hold office. The war hero treatment -- half-mast flags, military guard, Air Force Two escort, calls for a statue at the Capitol or to lie in the Rotunda -- shows that for MAGA, service to Trump has become the highest, most honorable form of service.

Kirk’s murder is awful and ominous for this country. But no, we don’t need to honor him or “continue his work.”
