Jay Corvidae from EIGHTY DAYS turns the corner of a building. his back is turned to the viewer as he walks to the left of frame. his left hand is tucked in his pocket and in his right he holds something small and stick-like. a couple of nails have fallen out of his pocket. to his right, taking up much more of the composition, is a massive dark wall covered in thick textured brushstrokes, broken up by clean white pieces of paper that have been nailed into the wall. all of them say "ICE OUT". on the far right of the photo are the hake and sable brushes i used to paint this.

🎀 DISCOORDINATE 🎀 punk & lolita fashion sketchzine + essay // 32 pages // handsewn binding
the cover of DISCOORDINATE zine. it's a collage: the background image is an inverted scan of black lace gloves framing an ink drawing of a disheveled youth in a Lolita style dress and striped stockings sitting with an electric guitar draped with ribbons. the image is mostly black and white except for the title text, which reads "DISCOORDINATE" in a glitchy Matrix-like serif font that is a blue-screen-of-death shade of blue. a thick stack of zines on a table viewed from the side. the paper is an ivory color and the bindings on the spines are handsewn with threads that vary between red, pink and black-and-white diagonal stripe. a spread of some of the zine's interior pages, showing fountain pen ink sketches of punk and lolita clothing in emerald green and scarlet.

a closeup of a piece of fabric i found at the local creative reuse / thrift store that contains the patterns and instructions for sewing a pair of stuffed toy sheep. the example illustration shows the sheep with black faces and legs, patterned bodies and a ribbon bow around the neck. the larger sheep has a red-on-cream paisley pattern and wears a dark red bow. the smaller lamb has a delicate pink-and-red floral pattern on white with a pink bow. red title text reads: "VICTORIAN SHEEP" which is funny because the font is vaguely Western-looking. instructions printed towards the bottom right begin with: "There's no need to feel 'sheepish' about falling in love with this charming V.I.P. craft panel!" the full craft panel i found at the local creative reuse / thrift store containing the patterns and instructions for sewing a pair of stuffed toy sheep. pattern cutouts for the two halves of each sheep, the legs, ears, gusset and tail are all arranged in a pleasing, symmetrical manner. on the right is a small scrap of batting and the wooden buttons i picked out for the sheeps' eyes. not pictured is a big bag of wool that i'll use as stuffing.

warm up / fountain pen ink study of Pamela Colman Smith's 1909 tarot deck 🖋️🃏
a loose linework drawing in black fountain pen ink in my sketchbook. it is a study of the composition of the Death card in the 1909 tarot deck illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, but with my characters: a knight armored in black and mounted on a horse rides in profile from the left of the frame, one hand holding the staff of a large black banner with the roman numerals XIII and a large white flower on it. behind them, the sun is low on the horizon between distant towers and trees. on the ground about the horse's feet are clusters of amanita (deathcap) mushrooms and three figures: one in a crown and bejeweled lacy robes holding her hands up as if beseeching the knight, one with long hair and a white dress slumped to her side as if falling asleep (or dying) and one completely flat on their back on the ground, though their head is turned to smirk directly at the viewer and they are making a peace sign with one hand.

do you ever just think about the Agnes de Mille / Martha Graham "keep the channel open" story. i find it so profoundly moving, i had to copy it into my quote book in fountain pen
a quote i wrote in black fountain pen ink on a page of a notebook in a dark blue leather passport sized Traveler's Notebook cover. it reads: "Agnes DeMille, on Martha Graham: The greatest thing she ever said to me was in 1943 after the opening of OKLAHOMA! when I suddenly had unexpected, flamboyant success for a work i thought was only fairly good, after years of neglect for work I thought was fine.I was bewildered and worried that my entire scale of values was untrustworthy.I talked to Martha...in a Schrafft's restaurant, over a soda. I confessed that I had a burning desire to be excellent, but no faith I could be. Martha said to me, very quietly: 'There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it willbe lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that morivate you. went out to pick + draw mushrooms after the rains 🍄‍🟫
fountain pen ink drawings in my sketchbook of mushrooms found at Griffith Park in LA: an agaricus, a large deadly amanita with a small "skirt" partway down the stipe, a slender inkcap that is dying and turning up at the edges like an inverted umbrella and a zoomed in view of a schizophylum communii (may be spelled wrong, sorry) which looks kind of like a white dust bunny with branched spikes fountain pen ink drawings in my sketchbook of mushrooms found at Griffith Park in LA: a hevella hydropholus or "elfin saddle" which looks like a bit like either an elegant grove of trees or a broccoli, a turkey tail which somewhat resembles a turkey's tail but honestly reminds me more of the ruffled striated edge of a large oyster or clam, and an entoloma, a dark, ruffly cap and a hefty stipe like a bok choy, next to which i've written a small note reading "the one that smells like bleach"
