Woodworking with traditional tools, spoon carving, and mucking about. Occasional 16th/17th Century historical interpretation and shenanigans. Dog Dad.

Comments and questions welcome.

Not to worry, the blood is my own.

Reviving a project I set aside a couple of years back: a dugout chair. This one is from a dying red oak we had taken down, much of it with bad center rot. Not much to it, I’ll fit a plank for the seat, perhaps hinged for a little hideaway.

Further exploration of the red oak. It rives nicely, some interior staining (spalting? Does red oak spalt?) but only a bit of decay around the pith. Too bad I’m not doing greenwood furniture and my shingling project is finished. Will have to dream up some appropriate uses. #woodworking #greenwood

@sticknation.bsky.social Emerson models his latest great stick find.

Over the past few years I’ve been working mostly red oak, serviceberry, sycamore, pine, paulownia, and autumn olive.

I think it’s time to get to know American Beech.

A couple of years ago we had a big red oak come down after much wind and rain. It was a live fall, so it didn’t have center rot for a change. I did an exploratory cut but didn’t get back to it before snow/heat/excuses redirected my attention.

For decades I’ve wanted a lock like this. Alas, I don’t have a piece that’s worthy.

It’s Autumn here in Virginia and our new pup Emerson is having great fun frolicking in the fallen leaves.

Trying out a bit of checkering on a walking stick. Gives a nice pseudo-dragon scale effect, and a solid grip. Very meditative cutting all those facets. #woodworking #woodcarving

I find the shape of the man’s walking stick interesting as it bears a close resemblance to the sort of modern cane I’ve used after leg surgery. Nothing is new.

Just reminiscing about my days at ol’ Hohenheim U. before we head off to see the original Bride of Frankenstein. I’ve seen it several times but never on the big screen before.

Happy Halloween!

It’s a spoon! It’s a spatula! It’s both in a dubious combination. #woodworking #woodcarving #spooncarving

The completed expansion of the dog run (“LuluLand”), encompassing The Folly. Emerson in particular seems to enjoy the additional space for running laps and chasing balls.

Lulu and Emerson took me for a walk through the meadow and the woods. A frosty morning but it looks to be a beautiful day.

The expansion of Lulu and Emerson’s zoomie run is now operational, and Emerson seems to having a grand time with the additional space. Lulu, being older and wiser, uses shortcuts to keep up with her big little brother. #dogs #LuluLand

Autumn is getting settled in central Virginia, and Blue Stem grass has erupted in puffy white seeds. We are forecast for a heavy acorn mast this year, though so far it’s just been average. Looking forward for the leaves to turn and drop, wood cutting doesn’t really start until the leaves are down.

Lulu (l) and Emerson (r) hep me work on expanding the fence around their run, known as LuluLand. (Run through a Prisma filter called “Curly Hair”). #poodles #dogs #Prisma #DogsOfBluesky

A brief video of the shaving weasel at work.
September 20, 2025 at 5:47 PM
There are various ways to rough out a spoon, such as an axe or a drawknife. I’m using a push/pull shave. When I don’t have a shaving horse handy, I use a self-made gizmo I call a shaving weasel. It holds the workpiece on the ends, keeping hands free. #woodworking #woodcarving #spooncarving

I decided to do spoons from this piece of branch wood. For splitting small pieces I’ll often use a Japanese tool called a Nata. Heavier than a knife but nimbler than a froe. Splitting dry wood is a bit riskier than green, but it worked. See Alt text. #woodworking #woodcarving #spooncarving

I know it’s terribly 2016, but I still enjoy running some of my carving doodles through some Prisma filters and see what comes out. #woodworking #woodcarving #prisma

I think there may be an unconventionally shaped utensil lurking in this stick of seasoned Autumn Olive. As usual, there is only one way to find out.
