Ok, so Fate of Ophelia is the first Taylor Swift song that has earwormed me since Style on 1989.

You'll get promotion after promotion at big tech companies for spunking billions of dollars up the wall, but you'll
never get a promotion for saying "Here's why this is a bad idea, I can save you billions."
I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.

I know nothing about Dr Who, but, for Londoners, the phrase "Going For Dinner With Billie Piper" is the absolute best way to remember the order of the vertical streets running east to west in Soho (Greek, Frith, Dean, Wardour, Berwick, Poland) and has saved many a late night out

A very worrying escalation of online harassment.

Somebody has used a video of me saying "racism in football is a game of two halves" + put a fake voiceover on it saying "what I would say to the girls of Rotherham is it is a game of two halves"

I don't know what assets #SWFC can sell right now to pay off the creditors. The chairman owns hillsborough and the training ground, and they cannot sell any players until Jan.

It'd be nice of Downing Street would wholeheartedly condemn the Lam mass-deportation stuff, but it's also an enormous failure of the centre-right to maintain a cordon sanitaire against this slide.

Trying to think of a more inhumane policy that a mainstream party has floated in my lifetime, and I'm coming up blank.
Here Lam explicitly sets out her proposal - which is official Conservative Party policy - to deport long-standing legal permanent residents who have *ever* claimed any benefit, including the state pension or child benefit (even if the child is British), or who earn less than £39K.

"I warn you not to fall in love with someone from another country. And if you do, I very specifically warn you that she mustn't take maternity leave."
The Conservatives have drafted the legislation.

ANY one of the conditions being met leads to ILR being revoked.

If annual income falls below £38,700 for six months (for any reason at all)

The Secretary of State would also have the powers add whatever further conditions they want.

Decided to tackle the pile of boxes of "stuff I've bought, and should keep the boxes for in case I decide to sell it".

Lots of idiocy here. I still have a box for a DJI Air 2s that I lost in a ravine three years ago.

The market cap of Volkswagen Group, a company that makes a lot of cars that don't blow up, and sold about 5x the number of cars Tesla did last year, is £50bn.

Modest proposal:

BBC BRING BACK 'TOMORROW'S WORLD'.

Science, tech, environment reporting are woeful currently. Something that blasts excitement about what a golden age we're in of discovery (vaccines, computing, space exploration etc etc) but can also be a trojan horse for warnings on climate etc

Is there some regulatory reason we're still installing USB-A sockets on new public infrastructure in the U.K.?

Is there a word for the phenomenon where if someone asked you to write down the lyrics of a song that you had not heard for ages, you wouldn't be able to do it, but if you were asked to sing along you would recall the words just in time to be able to sing it.

Sensational scenes in the pub quiz lyrics round tonight, where one of the songs in the round came on immediately after the MC had finished reading the question. Large groans from patrons gave the game away.

It was Especially for You by Kylie & Jason btw.

This chimes with me too. Had a request from our support teams that they need better documentation for our Config. Could have used a tool, but didn't want to introduce a dependency for something that was really small. So I gave myself an hour to see what I could do with Claude.
My personal anecdote on the impact of AI (aka Claude Code + Cursor)

There was this tool I wanted to build that would have helped my business a little bit at @pragmaticengineer.com, but not enough to

1. Do it myself (would have taken ~days)
2. Hire someone (too much onboarding)

But...

I go to the same pub in my mums village every time I go home, purely just to see if they've fixed the lock on the sole men's cubicle.

That motherfucker has been broken for nearly a decade now.

Not Simpson's, but whenever someone lays out an apocalyptic scenario at work I drop this Partridge quote. Doesn't quite land when most of your colleagues aren't at least 40 and British though.
