Khaliun had intended for it to be a simple statement of fact; one that leaves no room for negotiation or second guesses, that exposes no chips or chinks in the flimsy armor holding her together in the wake of yet another tragedy. She knows that if she were to give him the opportunity to protest her decision, whatever resolve she had shored up would quickly buckle. Her proclamation hits its mark, though she cannot help but feel that it lands with all the grace of blanket artillery fire—scorching the earth at their feet, leaving once fertile soil fallow. He watches her with what she can only interpret as a grim amalgam of remorse and paternal sorrow, knowing what her decision will ultimately entail. Beneath it all, however, is the acceptance she had not needed, yet yearned for all the same. "I regret that you and Lamaty'i are left to fix the mistakes that I could not," Gulool Ja Ja says. His eyes have lost any luster, his voice its usual gravitas. "Would that I could join you and finish what I started." To see a man who had carried himself with such pride, had boasted such joyful spirit, left bedridden and enfeebled is as chilling as the anguished silence that has befallen the streets of Tuliyollal following the carnage. Khaliun places a hand in his open palm, the feeling of his scales against her skin a small comfort and welcome reminder that his heart beats still. "Zoraal Ja's atrocities are not your burden to bear," she says, her burgeoning anger a welcome old friend in the face of looming sorrow. Gulool Ja Ja's weary laughter is a thin, broken thing. "His actions are proof that I failed him as a father. I have a responsibility to make it right." "Stop it." It's the first time she has ever raised her voice with him. She is more taken aback than he, but she continues, "I'm not so arrogant as to pretend that I understand what Zoraal Ja is feeling. But regardless of his reasons, he is the only one who has to answer for his crimes." The adrenaline begins to fade. With it, her expression softens. "Punishing yourself by wondering if you loved him in the right way accomplishes nothing." Khaliun doesn't register that she's trembling until he pulls her close, the weight of his arm around her coupled with the steady rhythm of his breathing bringing her back to equilibrium. "If you are set on your course, there is something I would give you," he says by way of concession. He places in her hand a stone of garnet, its brilliance not tempered by decades of use. Golden twin fangs are emblazoned on the surface, confirming her suspicion as to the nature of it. The way the light catches on the facets produces a radiant glow. In that moment, she could convince herself that a piece of his very soul is cradled in her palm. "I can't accept this." "You will take it," he asserts, flipping her earlier script against her. "I am not able to right my son's wrongs, so I ask that you do so in my stead." He relinquishes his hold on her with a wan smile. "I have faith in you, mi luna. Trust that my crystal will teach you what I could not." There's a warmth to the stone that calls to mind memories of blood-soaked sands, aggrieved apparitions, and absolution draped in blackest night. Clutching it to her chest, it's as if she's welcoming another piece of herself home. She can only hope that he, too, will learn to forgive himself.

My windscreen cracked this morning (lmao) but I managed to write 800 words yesterday im proud of so riding that high for while #ciciwrites
But any serenity he might have gleaned is soon destroyed by force of Aoi's playful exhale. She's barely even begun to open her mouth when he feels the muscles in his temple being to throb. "Did you?" She has the gall to sound airy, flirty even, with him as she tilts her head coquettishly. She even leans closer, almost as if she wants to share a secret with him. He curses himself even as he echoes the movement despite his better judgement. "Should I have you check my pulse?" Aoi giggles as if there could be no greater comedy than such a thought and in response Thancred feels his already frayed patience snap. "This isn't a joke," he growls through his bared teeth. Emerald eyes only grow brighter as they excitedly skitter across his face, eagerly soaking up his misery the same way she did her wine. "I know what I saw." "I'm sure you do," she agrees easily with her hands raised is a gesture designed to placate and yet it only succeeds in fanning the flames of his steadily rising anger. "But do you comprehend it?" She chides with a click of her poisonous tongue, even throwing in a wag of her finger for good measure, and for a moment he finds himself transported back to the Studium-suddenly a decade younger with his shoulders bowed beneath the weight of baggage he's long since deceived himself into believing he's outgrown as one of his many lecturers dresses him down in front of his peers. A reminder which soon has him kissing his teeth as the glare he has aimed the Au Ra only grows sharper. Resentment soon courses through his veins but whether it's aimed at her cruelty or his stupidity he can't be sure. Believing that she would answer his plight with anything but a callous disregard for his suffering was nothing more than foolish hope dreamed up by a deluded mind. For somehow he'd allowed himself to forget that the sole reason he even sat across from her this night was because it was her selfish hand that had reached for his neck, greedily clasping it as she pulled him from the grave. Rendering him nothing more than her victim, at the mercy of her ever changing moods, for the rest of the life she had so graciously bestowed upon him.
