New paper out today in @meps-ir.bsky.social: www.int-res.com/abstracts/me...

Adult eastern oysters at their northern limit go dormant in winter by altering the fatty acid composition of their lipid membranes to adjust membrane fluidity.

But we don’t know how juvenile oysters overwinter.

Atlantic Canadians who enjoy a nice feed of oysters may have noticed that big oysters were in short supply at the local markets this year.

I chatted with Vanessa Vander Valk of CBC Radio yesterday about the likely reasons why.

Screw off, dad. Get back to work. We're busy snuggling 😆

February 14th is only a few weeks away.

This Valentine's Day, find someone who looks at you the way Roxy looks at Luna when they are each playing with the exact same kind of ball but Roxy really wants the one Luna has just because Luna has it.

They switched soon after I took this photo 😂😂

"Get in, losers. We're going for a walk in the woods at Uxi's house."

Great afternoon in the woods with Jeff, Katie, and the dogs! They're tuckered now. Roxy slept the whole drive home 💤 😂

Ecological meta-analyses often inherit medical assumptions. High heterogeneity, small sample sizes, etc. break those assumptions.
In the first post of a new series, I show why a “significant pooled effect” can be statistically correct but practically unhelpful. drmattg.github.io/Uncertain_Ec...

After being away for most of Nov, it's been super nice being present at home for 3 wks

But back to reality tomorrow. Before that, I'm soaking in every last minute of snuggle time with my girls, least not this adorable view of Roxy snoozing on her sister's butt.

My God I'm a lucky man.

What an embarrassing turnout in Minnesota for these World Junior games. Honestly, I've seen bigger crowds at high school tournaments back home in Cape Breton. The IIHF seriously needs to reconsider hosting tournaments in the USA after this one. These crowds are absolutely pathetic.

We recently installed security cameras at the house after some neighbours had their vehicles broken into.

Haven't caught anything too unusual yet, but this guy looks a bit sketchy.

Nice to have some piece of mind around the property 📷

More than a foot of snow in just a few hours meant a little New Year workout in the driveway tonight. Can't wait to do it again in the morning ❄️🙄😂

It was nice to actually build a Christmas gift this year. My 87yo nanny has been asking for a new mailbox for a while, so I decided to get off me arse & build her one for Christmas. Had to pivot at the last minute after Amazon fucked up & sent me two different sized numbers, but it turned out OK! 📬

....and once again, officiating at the World Juniors is all over the board and makes no fucking sense. Not only did they miss a clear hit from behind, but that was OBVIOUS goalie interference. I can see this game will be a long and frustrating one lol. 🙄😑

Dad keeps telling us that a ball will drop at midnight, so we spent some time today practicing to catch it 🐕🥎

The last sandwich of 2025 🥪

As we move into the new year, some wise words from Roxy: "Wag more, bark less, always look forward, and keep your eyes on the prize. That's how you get the cheese."

Happy New Year, friends. Wishing you all the best for 2026. 🎊🥂🍾🍻

World Juniors in the Clairville Cellar 🏒🥅🇨🇦

Two goals for renovating this space this year:

1. Convince better half to let me turn it into a Red Wings man cave

2. Turn it into a Red Wings man cave 🤣 🔴🪽
