Most #DoctorWho fans know about Colin Baker trying to understand the Sixth Doctor’s motivations in the middle of Mindwarp. What I’m curious about is Eric Saward’s side of that story—have we ever really heard his response or thought process in reply to Baker?

“Mindwarp” asks us to question what we’re seeing on screen—at the Sixth Doctor’s expense. It’s possible he’d act this way, but as both character and actor ask: why? That disconnect is why the story didn’t land then—and still doesn’t. #DoctorWho

With the winter storm predictions, I checked in on my 72-year-old neighbor. She said she only needed a few items from the grocery store. I gave her my list as well, because there's no reason for both of us to go.

The pink ocean and alien sky VFX are a real highlight of "Mindwarp"—as striking, in their own way, as the opening space station fly-by. Though I couldn’t help wondering how long Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant had to slog around in wet trousers during filming. #DoctorWho

And just like that, Mindwarp takes Six and Peri right back to their adversarial dynamic. The Doctor lies to Peri to get her to Thoras Beta, then ignores her pleas to leave. Is this the Matrix distorting events? Maybe—but the Doctor doesn’t protest much. #DoctorWho

Dominick Glynn gives us a fantastic new #DoctorWho theme in Season 23, and his incidental music for The Mysterious Planet is absolutely first-rate. All respect to Dudley Simpson, but some of my favorite classic Who music is from the ’80s.

“The Mysterious Planet” shows Robert Holmes paying off #DoctorWho threads he began as script editor in mid-70s. Gallifrey’s corrupt leadership—and their willingness to do anything to monopolize their secrets—comes into focus. Here it’s just a few redacted words. It gets far more sinister from here.

Robert Holmes’s last full #DoctorWho script is full of his signature double-acts, especially Glitz and Dibber. Their banter in "The Mysterious Planet" is a standout—and a final reminder of how great Holmes was at character.

One of the biggest changes in #DoctorWho Season 23—beyond all-video and the new titles—is how much warmer the Sixth Doctor/Peri dynamic becomes. Similar dialogue, far friendlier delivery. Really wish we’d had more time with this version of them.

Robert Holmes closed his #DoctorWho career the way he began it: with familiar threats. The Mysterious Planet clearly echoes The Krotons. I spotted it even as a young Whovian—and somehow, I still don’t mind.
