I want to remind everyone that the traffic forecast used to justify road widenings is bogus. We know that DOTs know this is true because they don't check their past forecasts and oppose any proposal that would have them do that.

U.S. land use generates more trip-making that defaults to cars, and our road funding/governance that defaults to the state builds and operates high-speed arterials to carry those trips, creating unusually high exposure and severity by land use design.

2025 was a rocky year for US transportation. But there were some big wins.

At the top of the list: Manhattan congestion pricing. After 11 months, traffic is smoother, air is cleaner, and streets are quieter (but more bustling).

As AVs deploy and circle for passengers (or for their owners avoiding paying for parking), we will see traffic jams with empty cars regularly. We won't need a blackout.
