Michael Rose is 90 today. A brilliant solicitor, co-founder of the New North London Synagogue, husband of 66 years and counting, four children, 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Singer of comical songs, poet. A gentle, funny, lovely man.

Watching Wolf Hall s1 again is a strange experience. Wolsey was Bursar of Magdalen, and the College President Richard Mayew helped negotiate the wedding treaty of Katharine of Aragon and Prince Arthur.

How do you face fascism? I like Orwell's version: ground yourself in direct and immediate experience, trust your senses, find some joy, turn back to face the fascists and tell truths to combat the lies.
