It’s a mistake to ask this question because it assumes Trump’s rationality.

He wants to do this because it makes him feel powerful. He doesn’t care if the effects are good or bad. Indeed, the more destruction he causes, or the more people fear destruction he may cause, the more powerful he feels.
A question I've been debating with economist friends is what Trump is trying to accomplish with his tariffs. I mean, he can't be demanding that Canada and Mexico — with whom we have a free trade agreement! — open their markets. Now he says it's about immigration and drugs 2/

Lots of people are about to be really mad that price of eggs goes up but they can’t get a 2nd job because they can’t afford childcare and when they do finally get the eggs they get E Coli because there’s no FDA but can’t go to the doctor because they got kicked off their health plan. #FAFO
