Q: Why did Donald Trump bury Ivana on one of his golf courses?

A: So he could still cheat on her.

"What are you working on?"

I put the soldering iron on its stand and inspected my work.

"A time travel receiver. I figured out the machine can't travel in time itself."

"Do you have a transmitter too?"

I plugged the power in. "Not yet."

A newspaper appeared in the machine.

"I will, next year."

As for the latest storm wreaking itself on western Europe, I knew it had a female name starting with C. The actual name though escaped me for a moment, so now it is Storm Chlamydia

In town to see @20thcenturymarc.marcburrows.co.uk presenting his book on Xmas chart music. We've seen him a few times before, most recently over in Cork at the Irish Discworld Convention a few weeks ago

If they make me the next BBC DG I will...

Cancel all programmes with a "...with <presenter name>" titles.

Build a new state of the art production centre on the site of ETD Wood Norton (or under if stories about Bredon Wing were true).

Bring all production back in house using permanent staff.

Are magpies made from springs? The ones coming in and out of our garden at the moment flare their landings about 15 cm up, and come down with a triple bounce onto the grass

Our local bunch appreciate having monkey nuts put out for them, and usually turn up within 2 or 3 minutes. Today a crow too

The second Lancaster at Duxford - this is the actual flying one, in a different hanger, one not owned by the IWM. She's here for full maintenance for the next 18(?) months. They'll strip her down and rebuild her ready for the next decade. So don't expect her to be on the BBMF for a while

What happens when the RAF says they want the plane back when you've been carefully looking after it for over two decades

This is what we were up to this afternoon. SW is a fine town with a good amount of mediaeval and later building around, though its castle is a mess

Kemi Badenoch makes much more sense when you remember she's a Tory computer nerd working extremely outside her actual competencies

There was a recent thing about which side cats curl up on, and I even saw a poll for left or for right

Our Toro wire like any future such polls to include the option of both and neither. I've seen him curled up both ways tonight, and also stretched out on his back for the neither

A rather fine present from #Bristolcon. It's a model of the Andy Bigwood Speedbird in its landing dock

Now we have to get it home

I remember years ago workshopping The Villages, which was then a short story, and someone said they thought it should be a novel, and I said I didn’t think I could write a novel, and Paul Kincaid said, “Think of it as a novella and just keep going.” Sound advice.
in which Dan very controversially claims that “a novella is just a novel that is slightly short”
📣 NEW CRITICAL FRIENDS!

In a new ep of the @strangehorizons.bsky.social SFF criticism podcast, I talk with @redfernjon.bsky.social and Nileena Sunil about books that might be longer, and others that could be shorter.

How to read a text that offers too little, or too much, stuff? Some ideas.
