In which Catherine O'Hara explains how Martin Short taught her how to impersonate women.
Also: kids, Johnny Carson was one the best at interviewing his guests. Perfect example right here.

Enjoy.

PS - We miss you already, Catherine.

Someone remarked earlier that Catherine O'Hara's performance in A MIGHTY WIND (2003) is the perfect realization of comedy and tragedy being two sides of the same coin.
I couldn't agree more.
And it gave us this beautiful moment, with co-star Eugene Levy.

They arrested the wrong Don. Yes.
JANE FONDA: “I know Don Lemon. My husband created CNN. And I will fight for their right to speak… they arrested the wrong Don. This is how autocrats act. We can’t fall for it.”

Cheery slices of life--just kidding! see suicide, death in Appointment in Samarra, Butterfield 8, others--the works of John O'Hara, #botd in 1905, were nevertheless loved by readers, critics and Hollywood. A wunderkind at 30, he was pissed he never got a Nobel.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd do the same things only faster, said Tallulah Bankhead, #botd in 1902. A belle gone bad--rather, gone her own way--she delighted in scandalizing with her smoky voice (childhood bronchitis + 100 cigarettes/day). IMO Lifeboat was her best part.

Now best known as the horribly hilarious Lucille Bluth (less known: treated badly on the set), but Jessica Walter, #botd in 1941, broke thru in 1971's Play Misty for Me, as the psycho killer Evelyn who just couldn't take no from Clint Eastwood's Dave and his big ole pompadour.

This is a president. An educated, cultured man who informed, comforted and guided, speaking to America during dark times through "fireside chats." He welcomed the hatred of the moneyed class, but he made life-saving alliances at home and across the globe. Franklin Roosevelt, #botd in 1882.

So many roles on screen, on stage and in the world. She's won a bounty of awards, but she lost roles for years for her outspoken activism. But she kept going. Here's to Vanessa Redgrave, #botd in 1937.

#botd in 1860, Chekhov, a physician by training who once said "medicine is my lawful wife; literature is my mistress," showed the way for modern drama and fiction. His plays will be probably mounted generations from now...assuming humans haven't blown themselves up.

Paddy Chayefsky, #botd in 1923, made intimate dramas like Marty, but also incisive social satire like The Hospital and then, more famously, Network. These days, it's easy to feel we're trapped in the sequel to Network just with unbridled billionaires + social media.

#botd in 1880 as William Claud Dukenfield, W. C. Fields started his career in his teens as vaudeville's "tramp juggler" before his sarcastic comedy act became a headliner. He once shared a bill with Sarah Bernhardt. At first, alcohol was just part of his screen persona. Later...

Actually, current usage of "snark" is supposedly not related to The Hunting of the Snark by Lewis Carroll, #botd in 1832. Still our world does seem to get curioser and curioser. Maybe Carroll (writer, mathematician, photographer and deacon) might be able to explain it.
