Bank holiday activities included catching up with @beardydylan.bsky.social while he's visiting from Canada (lovely to get a copy of his PhD thesis too - I'm a very proud supervisor! 😊), and painting the front door and garage to brighten up the house a bit... I think it looks better?! 😬🖌️🩵

It was great to see so many wonderful talks and presentations at the RE Peter Biology Conference last week hosted by @ualberta.bsky.social!

In particular, the keynote by @rachaelmorgan.bsky.social on how temperature and oxygen changes can impact fish was fascinating! 🐟

This week I have been busy on an extensive Wilderness First Aid course to feel better prepared for my upcoming fieldwork ⛑️❄️

My favourite parts of the course were learning how to build (and move) a fire from scratch, and making a quinzhee shelter out of snow as a shelter for casualties! ⛺

Last week I saw @jackielebz.bsky.social give a fantastic talk at @ualberta.bsky.social, on how insects remodel their flight muscles to combat energy stress 💪🏼🪽

The graphics were awesome and made the talk super accessible, even to people without biology backgrounds 😍👏🏼
I definitely learnt a lot 👌🏼

I'm very pleased to be joining the University of Alberta as a Postdoctoral Fellow! 🤓🇨🇦

In my role I'll be researching contaminants in the Arctic and their potential impacts on the wider environment 👀❄️⚠️

Just a little fun water fact for Xmas.
97% of the world's #water is salty (the oceans).
Of the 3% freshwater, the vast majority is locked up in ice caps, glaciers, & deep groundwater. Only a tiny fraction of 1% is accessible in rivers, lakes, groundwater, & rain. Use it carefully.

Last night I got to hear about some amazing work done in Antarctica by researchers from the University of Plymouth/ @plymouthmarine.bsky.social, at a talk hosted by @rgsibg.bsky.social & the Royal Society of Chemistry

The event was fully booked with >115 attendees and I'm glad I was one of them 😍👏🏼🇦🇶

Happy #PolarPrideDay2024! We are grateful that our grassroots efforts are still going strong & this day has special meaning for so many globally! We are a handful of volunteers who, since 2018, have quietly offered advice & resources to polar professionals & asked orgs to prioritize DEI. #PolarPride

Hi! I'm Dylan and I love cold places 😍❄️

I have almost completed my PhD (post-viva and just finishing minor corrections) at the University of Plymouth in the UK.

I have been researching contaminants in glacial environments and I am passionate about environmental monitoring and protection 🌊❄️🏔️
