A bunch of folks at Oxide uncovered a tricky deadlock associated with async Rust (yes, another!), so--of course--@bcantrill.bsky.social and I got the crew together to discuss. If you're writing async Rust, you'll want to know how to avoid and diagnose "Futurelock"

New post: SocketAddrV6 is not roundtrip serializable 😱

A journey from an innocent property-based test at Oxide to the depths of the IPv6 specification, with tons of information about the flowinfo (and scope_id) fields. Give it a read!

Neural imaging would surely reveal that my carpaccio aphasia is due to damage in the center of the brain that forms short-term food memories, a condition first popularized in Oliver Sacks's landmark book, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Cheeseburger"
@bcantrill.bsky.social @ahl.bsky.social Books in the Box V might be Oxide episode of the year. I think the segue to @molly.wiki 's reviews or the Carpaccio story alone would have secured the nomination.

A message that's more easily heard today than in the spring: if you live in Seattle (say) and want neither the sun to rise at 4a on the summer solstice nor it to rise at 9a on the winter solstice (and most people want neither of these things!), there will be DST or something like it. Happy fall!

So, the episode that @ahl.bsky.social and I did on AI in higher education has an "information panel" on climate change (?) that they show on "videos related to topics prone to misinformation"?! WTAF? www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2vc...

My colleague Dave Pacheco wrote up a great description of a new (to us?) Rust async pathology--"futurelock"--another extremely sharp edge to watch out for, with no particular guardrails. Of course, we'll be talking about it with @bcantrill.bsky.social on Monday's Oxide and Friends

How is it that the company that effectively invented both modern search AND modern AI is now managing to grievously fuck up BOTH of them? I mean, my affection for @matthewsanabria.dev aside, this is just COMICALLY bad.
