What was the Dotcom Boom like? Bryan Cantrill (@bcantrill.bsky.social - cofounder and CTO at Oxide):

"One of my early life lessons: that boom will go on longer than you think possible, and when it switches, it will collapse faster than you can fathom."

Last OxF of the year! @bcantrill.bsky.social and I reflected on the year of Oxide and Friends. Big theme this year? Bugs and debugging. Or as ChatGPT put it inaccurately, "filled with painful specificity and earned insight". Sure, whatever! youtu.be/kGNoSYQchS8

How have servers and the cloud evolved in the last 30 years, and what might be next? @bcantrill.bsky.social has been at the thick of the industry since the Dotcom Boom, and shares fascinating stories.

Bryan is one of my all-time favorite people to talk with - don't miss this one.

I'll say here what I left unstated in my @monktoberfest.com talk: AWS in particular is in a state of cultural collapse because they have done exactly this -- and their RTO mandate has served to decimate organizational trust.
Another awesome @monktoberfest.com talk by @bcantrill.bsky.social ! It's absolutely worth watching the whole talk, but I think the last bit is great way to wrap up, where Bryan talks about broken institutional and organisational trust using RTO example:

A post to my future self, who may find this unbelievable: somehow, over a course of a decade, this dude managed to continue to shock and horrify -- that whenever you thought he could sink no lower, he found a way with some new act of unfathomable indecency. And he did it for A DECADE.

Gutted by the news out of Brown. I -- like generations before and after me -- have so many formative memories at B&H and the SciLi; this is all very close to home. ☹️

I will say among people I've worked with professionally, there's technical disagreement all the time (which is good), but there's absolutely zero disagreement on lock poisoning. I haven't seen this kind of unanimous opinion in a long time

New post: a defense of lock poisoning in Rust.

Followup to recent discussion: decided to write about lock poisoning, looking at the arguments on each side, and informed by our experience at @oxide.computer dealing with the parallel problem of unexpected async cancellations
