I think "adopted it eagerly' is likely a bit of a misread of history (I think it's much more: "made to see the light"), but we would need to talk to Larry McVoy to be sure. Maybe a future Oxide and Friends guest?
But those tools like quilt were still rudimentary, so it's unsurprising that when true DVCS became available in the form of BitKeeper Linux adopted it eagerly, despit misgivings over it being proprietary software.

On this week's Oxide and Friends, @booch.com joined @bcantrill.bsky.social and me to talk about the past, present, and future of software engineering. From hand-made computers and the software crisis of the late '60s to LLMs (of course) we covered a lot... with--as always--many dated references!

Robotic help for caregivers, sure -- but robots AS caregivers?! I mean, especially from this guy of course, but honestly any guy. Feels like there's something tautological here in that any human broken enough to suggest this is not someone you would trust to look after your own kids?

The Oxide RFD on using LLMs is exceptionally well written (h/t @bcantrill.bsky.social). This is a more coherent idea of what writing/text/language *is* and what's it's for---and why its expedited manufacture won't invalidate all aspects of that ontology---than a good chunk of the humanist hysterics.

At the risk of being self-aggrandizing: if there is Hater's Guide to Oracle being written, it feels like I should at least be on the shortlist to write the foreword?
Currently working on one of my favorite pieces ever: The Hater’s Guide To Oracle. This company is so stupid and Larry Ellison has bet the farm on OpenAI having $300 billion to give it over five years. Larry Ellison is H.R. Geiger’s Jerry Stiller and he’s rigged his company to blow
