When you see the first flowers from afar and think that spring has finally arrived. Then you realize the flowers are dry, remnants that managed to stay there through the winter. Spring in Mtl is like a fickle lover, always making false promises to those who feel forever stuck in Feb #Montreal

I just realized that Ukrainian writers who joined Armed Forces mostly did it as volunteers. Pro-peace, without military background, using "soft power" in their everyday life. Believing in democracy. They were NOT drafted, it was their choice. Thank you
On March 14, Ukraine honors its volunteers—ordinary people who stood up for freedom and democracy. Among them are writers, publishers, and journalists. Thanks to the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM Vienna), we continue our Words and Bullets series. chytomo.com/en/tag/words...

We all need good news, so today we have received a printed copy of “Cultural“! An excellent group of authors contributed to various topics, while the Chytomo team focused on Literature, Publishing, Cultural Media, and Language. The book is now available in Ukrainian from #Knyholove Publishing.

What an important point raised when the world is collapsing 👏
GLENN: Why don't you wear a suit? You're at the highest level in this country's office & you refuse to wear a suit. A lot of Americans have problems with you not respecting the office.

ZELENSKYY: I will wear a costume after this war will finish. Maybe something like yours. Maybe something better.

…only a few tips how to survive intellectually and financially after all:

- read books, not X
- support journalism and culture (@chytomo.bsky.social just in case you like what my team is doing).
- if you’re a creative entrepreneur, never rely on just 1️⃣ source of funding (it was painful with USAID)

When I'm looking back on 2024, I'm kind of proud. It's a story about how one "niche" media can have a global coverage. #media #UkrainianCulture

1/ This is a photo of Ostap Onistrat that I’m holding in my hands. He was a student at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, one of Ukraine’s top universities.

It's impressive how culture could flourish in camps, just among displaced people. And there is no surprise, knowing that free thinking was banned in the Soviet Union, but still..
1/ Do you know, that in 1945 post-war West Germany there were displaced-persons camps, or DP camps? Here is a thread explaining why these camps became important centres of Ukrainian culture and publishing. [Full article: chytomo.com/en/german-dp... ]

I was lucky to talk to Data Kharaishvili, the translator of the famous children's book series "Captain Underpants", one of the Georgian peaceful protesters who was violently beaten by so-called police and detained with numerous injuries. chytomo.com/en/georgian-... #GeorgianProtests

This is where I spent my student years, where I met Oksana Khmelyovska, our Chief Editor, and launched Chytomo. It is SO painful.
1/2 Chytomo's birthplace, the Institute of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, suffered damage today due to a Shahed drone attack💔. Chytomo originated as a bachelor's diploma project at the institute

My review in the Italian professional magazine GdL was published! Glad to mention Sense bookstore opening, the outstanding achievements of the Old Lion Publishing, establishing new indie publishers (and even Crimean Tatar's one!), and new festivals. Sadly, with war as a background bit.ly/48D0HWx

Previously, the peak viewing hours for @chytomo.bsky.social (Ukraine) were in the morning. However, over the last two years, we've observed an increase in views during nighttime. Interestingly, these views predominantly come from Ukraine, not the U.S. Guess why 😢

When I returned from the Salon du Livre de Montréal in 2019, I was absolutely sure that there was no need to organize the Ukrainian national stand there. I believed it wasn't an international event. Ironically, here I am, organizing the Ukrainian national stand for the second year now.

The only reason to go on Twitter / X is to see the updates of Oksana Semenik at her Ukrainian Art History account. But I'm happy at least to announce Oksana's review on the Eye of Storm here

Ukrainian readers got the opportunity to read this story just now. But let us remind that “The Death of a Solider Told by His Sister” is available in English. Thank you for sharing this deeply personal and heartbreaking story, Olesya ❤️‍🩹
I can't express the trepidation I felt at the launch of my book in Ukrainian. Very grateful to Vikhola, Lviv Book Forum and Hay Festival for organising it, Iryna Sklokina for moderating, and all who came to listen to my story and share theirs.
