A thread 🧶…

Pfc Joe E. Mann. 22 y/o and one of only two #medalofhonor recipients in #101stairborne division during #WW2. Many people visit the memorial to Joe near the site where he sacrificed his life to safe his mates every year. Fewer people know and visit the other memorial to Joe. 1/

A smashing day walking the Oosterbeek perimeter with five guests from Berkshire, UK, discussing the dramatic events taking place there in Sept 1944 and the experiences of British airborne troops and Dutch civilians in what became known as the ‘Witches’ Cauldron’.

Yesterday’s private tour in the Footsteps of Easy Company 506 in NL was a huge success. The client from Connecticut, US got into ww2 history through the series and wanted to visit the historical sites. Yesterday, the Netherlands was on the list.

The church in Neuvilly-en-Argonne served as a medical facility during WW1. One of the patients treated here was Lt.Col. George S. Patton Jr., who was wounded on 26 Sept 1918 near Cheppy (4.5 mi to north) while leading his tanks, supporting US 35th Infantry Division to capture that village.

German cemetery at Recogne. A little of 6,800 men and boys are buried here, the youngest being 17. Coming here with a @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour group probably brings more visitors to this cemetery than German families visiting this year as few visit these graves.

US Netherlands Cemetery in Margraten always is a special place to visit on the @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tours. This time, we laid our wreath at the grave of William Dukeman who was killed in action on 5 Oct 1944 at the ‘Crossroads’ near Heteren, NL.

A collage of photos of our Market Garden & Island day of this last @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour this Spring. Again a wonderful group to take to locations from series & beyond, sharing not only Easy’s story but of Market Garden as a whole. #ww2travel #ww2history #bandofbrothers

While on our visit to @dachaumemorial.bsky.social on this @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour, the drawing in this collage caught our attention. Drawn by Zoran Musič in 1974 & called ‘We are not the last’. Musič, a Dachau survivor, documented his experiences through art. More than sheer hell

During our visit at Luxembourg American Cemetery this morning on this @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour we laid a wreath at Pfc John Julian’s grave. After visiting the other Easy Company men buried there, our guests from West Point honoured their fellow West Pointer, General George Patton.

With only one man killed during the Siege of Bastogne, the most violent period for Easy Coy & many other units in the area was after the siege. The #easycompany memorial at Bastogne forcefully underlines this point. Visited on our @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour yesterday.

LtCol Robert Cole. Killed on 18 Sept 1944 during Op Market Garden and posthumously awarded the#moh #medalofhonor. According to Eisenhower, Cole was “… one of our ablest and certainly one of our most gallant officers.” We visit his memorial and grave on @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour

Recreating Dick Winter’s photo and a visit to The Crossroads are just two of the highlights on the @wwiimuseum #easycompany tour while in NL. Last Sunday was no exception with another splendid group of Americans following Easy’s footsteps.

Today’s visit to the Eagle’s Nest was the last stops on the Easy Company tour that began, for the guests, in England. It was a great pleasure to guide the second half, from Eindhoven to here for the @wwiimuseum.bsky.social and @battlefielddisc.bsky.social Great stops, great groups and new friends

A visit to the Eagles Nest marked the end of another fabulous @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour. From Albourne to the Eagles Nest, guests travelled in the footsteps of this company, famed by the HBO series. 1/2

Today we visited Dachau, the first Nazi concentration camp. A place of unimaginable suffering—but also a place of remembrance and warning. History happened here. We must never forget what hatred can lead to.

Our visit to @dachaumemorial.bsky.social today on our @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour. Evocative, sobering, heartbreaking … but also an essential visit in understanding ‘Why We Fight’ as one of the episodes is titled. #bandofbrothers #ww2travel #holocaust #neveragain

Our visit to the Luxembourg American Cemetery is always impressive. Though all US war cemeteries in Europe are well-kept, this one is always extremely immaculate imo, adding much to its serene atmosphere. @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour last Wed

Walked the Bois Jacques today on our Easy Company tour—where the 101st held fast in snow and shellfire during the Battle of the Bulge. The foxholes are still there. Powerful to stand where they stood. @wwiimuseum.bsky.social @battlefielddisc.bsky.social #WWII #BandOfBrothers #Bastogne

Bois Jacques #easycompany positions and the memorial at the former railway crossing. Invariably, this visit always is one of the highlights on the @wwiimuseum.bsky.social Easy Company Tour, also last Tuesday. #bandofbrothers #ww2travel #battleofthebulge

One of the nice things in Bastogne nowadays are the 1944/45 photos at squares & buildings showing what it looked like during the Battle o/t Bulge. Here are some examples, pics taken last Tue on our @wwiimuseum.bsky.social #easycompany tour.
