TAKE ACTION with SCBNA TODAY to write in opposition to the proposed rescission of the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

This legislation brings devastating & irreversible consequences to the biodiversity, wildfire resilience, and long-term health of our nation’s forests.

Hot off the presses 🔥🦇! In a new paper, we describe a new migratory strategy (pell-mell migration) in which hoary and eastern red bats migrate north in the autumn— sometimes long distances— before turning around and migrating south. 1/n

New pub from my first PhD student @batsonthemove.bsky.social.

She found some bats have a complex migration strategy: two species move north in the autumn, flying long and likely circuitous routes of hundreds of miles, before ultimately returning south to overwinter.

Also if you're at #ESA2025 and interested in bats (maybe birds too), bioacoustics, arid landscapes, and thinking of a PhD, please say hello. I plan to recruit 1-2 grad students. Spring or fall 2026 start with a focus on desert waters or renewable energy. lavertylab.org

Happy to meet up!

The bottom line with the proposed cuts to NSF is to cut the number of working scientists and disappear opportunities to train new scientists.

This is a PROPOSED budget to Congress. Call your reps.

This is terrible news & just one part of a bigger picture.

Prepare yourself for ongoing updates about the “reduction in force” this month and more again in April.

Talk to your community about it. They may not believe it at first - it sounds unbelievable! But we must bear witness & explain.

I was just forwarded communications from Duke admins that this is true: one of the largest and most active herbaria in the United States is being closed in the middle of an extinction crisis, because Duke leadership does not wish to support the infrastructure costs.
sad news - Duke University decided to dump their herbarium, which has over 800,000 plant specimens, one of the largest among in America, and includes many type specimens of Lady Gaga ferns. What a shame. Please stop Duke admins for making this horrible mistake!!

The first global temperature data is in for the full month of September. This month was – in my professional opinion as a climate scientist – absolutely gobsmackingly bananas. JRA-55 beat the prior monthly record by over 0.5C, and was around 1.7C to 1.8C warmer than preindutrial levels.
