We are the charity Barnes Common Ltd, looking after your local nature reserves. Our vision is Conservation, Biodiversity, Wellbeing, Lifelong Learning - for all.
The recent mild weather has created perfect growing conditions for #fungi. If you walk past any deadwood, chances are that there will be several types of fungi and other saproxylic (deadwood-dependent) organisms living on them. Find out more about winter fungi: barnescommon.org.uk/winter-fungi...
Winter Fungi on the Common
Fungi are an incredibly varied group, and not all of them have the traditional mushroom shape with a cap, gills and stem that most people tend to think of whenever fungi are mentioned.

Part of a large patch of Devil's Fingers fungus (aka Octopus Stinkhorn) in Rye, East Sussex. I smelt them before I saw them. An intense bouquet of rotting flesh to attract insects that then help spread spores. Brilliant!
