Former reviews editor at The Verge, Computerworld, and other pubs; current science fiction writer (although I write mostly fantasy).
In 1976, Rupert Murdoch bought the NY Post, which had been a liberal paper with fine columnists and sports coverage. Overnight, it became a far right tabloid; my father immediately cancelled his subscription. Seeing what's happened to WaPo, which once broke Watergate, the comparison is striking.

I've opted out of this GoFundMe - I've got some savings and other resources, so I'm okay for now - but I've got ex-colleagues who are now dealing with very difficult situations, especially in this job market. So I'm boosting this for anyone who can help.

A heartbreaking remembrance of Alex Pretti by @kristenradtke.bsky.social, a former colleague at @theverge.com who grew up with him. I've lost close friends, but none so brutally. My condolences to Kristen, and to Alex's family. May his memory be a blessing.
I wrote about my childhood friend Alexi Pretti. Please read it and share it and remember him as a human being. @theverge.com

You know, I used to shake my head at people - men mostly - who couldn't deal with retirement because they felt they lost their identity with their job. Yet here I am, newly laid off from what is most certainly the last full time job I will ever have, and I feel like I'm mourning my life.

My colleagues at The Verge Awards have chosen their "best of" awards for CES 2026, and it's a great collection of stuff -- and a lot of fun to read, even for devices you'd never actually buy. (Although I'm going to be really tempted by those $10 speakers...) www.theverge.com/tech/858494/...

Points to Bose for open-sourcing its old smart speakers instead of bricking them. (Not that I've ever been able to afford a Bose speaker, but it's still nice to hear when a company abandons its products but not its customers."

Every year at @theverge.com, the staff comments on their favorite books of the year (which I love, because it gives me so many ideas). This year, it includes books by @theodoragoss.bsky.social, @appletwigli.bsky.social, and one of my favorites, Ursula K. Le Guin. www.theverge.com/entertainmen...

Sitting waiting for an ultrasound and forced to listen to a 15 minute upbeat report on CBS on an author who died of brain cancer and how brave & peaceful & accepting & cheerful & loved she was. I want to throw my phone at the screen.

Listening to @thebrianlehrershow.bsky.social on WNYC as I usually do with half an ear while editing an article, and suddenly I realize I've been listening to one of my colleagues, @tinanguyen.bsky.social, being an expert on AI regulation. Pay attention, Barbara!

When I was 5 years old, my parents had a record of Elizabeth Cotton singing Freight Train. I used to sing with the record all the time. So the song is in my head. www.tiktok.com/t/ZTrFyR1Hf/

My grandmother was a left-wing Jewish radical and I wrote "Red Dybbuk" to honor her. That story is part of THE HISTORY OF SOUL 2065, included in the Mythic Delirium celebration.

Walking down 55th St. in Brooklyn, I passed a playground and 2 homes playing loud danceable music from 3 different cultures. If I lived next door to any of them, I probably would have been annoyed, but walking down the street, it was a cool experience.

Love the way Tina describes this as "the Game of Thrones of it all."
Some personal news: I’m back in the newsletter game.

The Verge and I are proud to announce the launch of Regulator, a weekly newsletter for Verge subscribers that covers the fights between Big Tech and Big Government.

I was recruited to contribute to this; not sure when (or if!) it will appear, but I'm sure all the other writers will be great!
Please subscribe to a newsletter I'm editing for @theverge.com. Every Sunday, our writer of the week will break down one story, going deeper on what they know best. It just might be your new shared obsession. www.theverge.com/the-stepback...
