Edwin Lutyens 1869 – 1944

English architect designed many English country houses, war memorials and public buildings. Not everyone’s cup of tea but Christopher Hussey wrote, "In his lifetime (Lutyens) was widely held to be our greatest architect since Wren if not his superior”.

Policy of containment that US would provide political/military/economic aid to countries under threat of communist influences. Led to formation of NATO in 1949

Submitted to Congress in March 1947 and considered to be start of Cold War

Cadbury brothers built a factory town known as Bournville after the nearby river and French word for "town". By 1960 the trust held 1,000 acres with 3,500 houses

The brothers believed in workers’s social rights and installed canteens, sport grounds and education facilities for every employee.

When brothers fall out

In 1919, Adi and Rudolph Dassler founded Geda shoe company.

After 30 years of working together, the brothers fell out and separated. In 1948 Rudolph established Puma and 1949 Adi formed Adidas.

Adidas is considered larger than Puma, though both are world renowned.

The Flying Scotsman

Built in 1923, it was the first train to clock 100mph on one of its Edinburgh to London runs in 1934. Retired by British Rail in 1963 after a working life covering two million miles.

Fully refurbished, it still makes occasional runs and special appearances throughout UK.

Camille Rosalie Claudel (1864 – 1943) - French sculptor known works in bronze and marble. Model and confidante of Rodin.

She died in relative obscurity after 30 years in an asylum but later gained recognition for the originality/quality of her art and now has a museum dedicated to her work
