The excommunication is fucking automatic, they do it to themselves the minute they try it.

But that's not a good news story, so the reporters will fuck it all up to write some nonsense

And now I have Who's On First stuck in my head.

"Strange names, pet names, like Dizzy Dean"

"His brother Daffy"

"Daffy Dean."

"And their French cousin"

"French?"

"Goofé."

"Goofé Dean? Ahhh, I see!"

I said, "he's a rabbi, I'm a mathematician, we both have lots of experience with what the rules actually mean and say and what we can prove from them,"

and the rabbi just burst out laughing, because I was exactly right.
February 3, 2026 at 10:04 PM
Oh, for sure.

Lemon works at Hillel here in town, and I've gotten to hang out with the rabbi they employ. We were sitting at a table, her boss(who I've known a while) came over and said, "what do you two have to talk about so much?"

He's not hulking enough to be an oaf.

"Clod" or "Klutz", however would fit

Glad to help!

The "what is and isn't meat" discussion in Catholicism often deals with intent/availability, poverty, location of the animal's habitat, and even some warm/cold blood distinctions.

It is fascinating to trace the various trains of thought that can lead to them.

For Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, those are days of both abstaining and fasting; the other Fridays in Lent are "just" abstaining
February 3, 2026 at 9:54 PM
Fasting and abstaining are different practices in Catholicism.

Abstaining is the "no meat" on Fridays, Fasting is the "one regular meal, two small meals that combined are less than the one regular" practice.
February 3, 2026 at 9:53 PM
Yeah, given the various differences I know of just diocese to diocese, I was not even going to try flipping between different denominations
February 3, 2026 at 9:37 PM
That is certainly an interesting question.

I bet, if you were so inclined, you could have quite a conversation with the leadership of your church about it.

I did quite enjoy the "hey, you want another ass beating, come on back out" chirp
February 3, 2026 at 6:54 PM
Calling SSPX and other sedevacantists "Catholics" is not right, AP article.

The fucking leader of that splinter group was excommunicated like 40 years ago, and they're not an official thing!

Also, I love to hear someone talk about their garden, and every time I hear someone talk about losing money gambling on sports, my brain just keeps repeating, "well, that's what you get, you dumbass."

Have you ever been to Spain?

I've been told the ladies are insane there, and they sure know how to use it.

Don't forget "how will the Olympic soccer tournament affect the Buckeyes this fall? Tonight, at 6."

At least three dudes will argue in articles that OSU should be recruiting a kicker at that tournament.

My dipshit uncle did a bunch of genealogy research into the family, and came across a dead-end around 1815 in far Eastern Poland.

He couldn't piece together "family with a top-15 Polish last name suddenly appearing in a parish Bible" into "Jews running and hiding from pogroms."

Hell yeah!

When I started to teach at my alma mater, we were still in a defined benefit plan, for the remainder of the calendar year, when it switched to defined contribution.

So I had 4 months of pension funding... "When you retire at 65, you'll get $0.18 per month," LOL
