Many members of the armed forces often suffer from cultural blindness and perpetuate myths instead of undertaking deep archival research. Not all. There are some good exceptions but we shouldn't assume that just because you served, you know what your are writing about.

God, I hate it when people state that a history book (not a memoir) was written by a (former) member of the armed forces. The implication being that they know what they are writing about. This is not so.
