The UK should halve its risky drinking rate over the next ten years, returning alcohol death rates to pre-pandemic levels in half the time, says a new report. And it should also make itself able to support 80% of alcohol dependent people. @ias.org.uk

1/2 We’d never tell people to “smoke responsibly” but telling people to “drink responsibly” is common practice by the alcohol industry.
Allowing the alcohol industry to influence policy-making is a clear conflict of interests and steps to reduce alcohol harm must be taken independently.

Cheap supermarket alcohol is the biggest threat to pubs, according to publicans.

The government could raise off-trade duty above inflation while protecting pubs via draught duty relief.

In short: duty cuts don’t help the public, they help shareholders.

Coincidentally, on the same day, an industry article stated that UK alcohol sales hit £27.4 billion last year - spirits alone almost £8bn. Almost the highest figure on record.
