We need a new political pragmatism in which long-term policies based on animal, plant and environmental health predominate, and we need to pursuade governments that failure to engage on those terms will risk loss of support. Hunting with dogs was supposed to be banned 20 years ago, but in reality it never stopped. Hunts have continued to chase and kill wild animals as if the law never changed.
