I spent most of December in England, celebrating a dowager’s milestone birthday (er, that is, mine!). It was not primarily a Jane Austen-centered trip; throughout my long lifetime I have most satisfyingly visited nearly every Austen-related site that I desired to see. (To confess the truth, I have not climbed Box Hill, but I may yet!)  Still, I am not so much changed as to be able to spend time in England without seeing…

I was in a very chill mood when I wrote it, and I found the writing process quite soothing, which was nice, because I can get quite intense when I'm producing a book!

I posted last week about my visit to a recreated Georgian townhouse in Bath, UK, that I had the opportunity to visit this past summer. My previous post was all about the "upstairs"--the rooms the gentry would have spent all their time in. Today's post is about the other half (or more!) of the inhabitants of the home--the servants. We start by making our way downstairs and through the arch that leads into the kitchen.

I posted a while ago about some of the different places I visited, including Jane's father's church and the cottage at Chawton, but I also really enjoyed touring a sample Georgian home while I was in Bath. This is at 1 Royal Crescent and is not to be missed if you visit Bath yourself!

It's a new year with new beginnings, lovely readers! What goes better with new beginnings than a new writing project? We, the authors of Austen Variations, were so happy with how well our "Pride and Prejudice: The Untold Stories," and "Prelude to Pemberley" were received, we wished to continue the fun, but with a slight twist. Beginning next week, we are going back to our roots...actually, those of our dear Jane who said, "Let other pens dwell on guilt and misery." And we agree!

It’s Still Christmas at Pemberley: The Fifth Day of Festivities
On December 29th in Regency England, Christmas was not over. In fact, they were right in the middle of it. Under the traditional church calendar, the Twelve Days of Christmas run from December 25 to January 5, with Christmas Day itself counted as the First Day. That makes December 29 the Fifth Day of Christmas, smack in the middle of Christmastide, when the feasting, visiting, and general merriment were still going strong.

Welcome to the 2025 Austen Variations Advent Calendar, where our amazing authors will bring you a new gift every day from now until December 24th. Christmas at Pemberley is no longer the quiet, solemn affair it once was. After their first full year of marriage, the great house glows with a new warmth: candlelight shimmers over evergreen garlands, fires crackle cheerfully on every hearth, and laughter, Elizabeth’s bright, sweet laughter, seems to linger in every corridor.

Why No One Is Hanging Stockings at Pemberley
When you picture Regency Christmas, do you see twinkling lights, piles of presents, and everyone in ugly sweaters? I regret to inform you that Elizabeth's Mr. Darcy owns zero ugly sweaters. Not even one with a reindeer. This is because in Jane Austen’s time, December looked a little different: No Christmas trees (for most English families): Those didn’t really become fashionable in Britain until a bit later, especially after the German Prince Albert popularized them in the Victorian era.
