Sketching is not about the sketch, but the quality of attention you give to the thing while sketching.

“Certain things in life, just aren’t worth it.”

Like dealing with a big city egomaniac.

A New York Restaurant, a Texas Farm and Their Plant-Based Brawl
They shared the same name, Dirt Candy, and a devotion to healthy food. But a trademark dispute turned into an urban-rural standoff.

“Frupidity thrives in large orgs, where budgets are tight, bureaucracies dense, and someone, somewhere, is always trying to impress a spreadsheet. The best part? It usually masquerades as good stewardship.”

A thought on aphorisms and aphorism stacking (or aphorism piping?)

Aphorisms are psychological tools. Given a situation, how do you orient yourself/what mindset should you embody?

Today, I realize you can stack them. The ones I did:

The world is made of funnels +

One person, one problem.

“Most people will solve problems they understand how to solve. That is, they will solve B+ problems instead of A+ problems. A+ problems are high impact but difficult. You don’t wake up in the morning with a solution.”

Two ways to drive oneself:

- Move the goal post closer (“Series of small successes”)
- Move the goal post farther (“No matter what we do, we’re always just 1% done”)

Data-driven organisations slowly start become inhuman, when each human they serve is a number, and you study these numbers in cohorts and populations, of course their humanity, their reality becomes invisible to you.

Erik J. Larson writes about the limits of induction in his book The Myth of Artificial Intelligence.

While he’s talking about AI, it’s making me realize why data-driven product management sucks – it also suffers from the limits of what’s possible with mere inductive reasoning.

‘Am I watching a movie?’ is exactly what I wondered while watching Deadpool vs. Wolverine. It felt more like a Insta reel skit starring Ryan and friends.

“It has no interest in telling a story at all…both product and advertisement, a snake eating its own tail”

The graphic design café.

- No sense of place, feels the same anywhere in the world
- Serves bougie sandwiches
- Serves artisanal coffee but not from the area it’s located
- Has cute line art on the menu, windows, walls and merch
- Name is in a modern snazzy font
- Has androgynous or asian baristas

Subtle / Gross
Soul / Body
Consciousness / Matter
Values / Choices
Brand / Product
Idea / Execution
Magic / Science
Emotion / Reason

The world over-values the gross forms of things, but *you* know that is only half the story. You don’t have to accept the dominant narrative.

You feel a real sense of elation if you have been wondering the entire time, “was it me?” and then eventually realize, “eff that, it wasn’t me. It was them.” A weight lifts off.

Another problem of large organisations: they very quickly get filled with gatekeepers. What Carlos Castaneda calls petty tyrants.
