Labels can impact politics. My paper @apsrjournal.bsky.social "What Happens When You Can't Check the Box?" shows when Middle Eastern & North African (MENA) Americans are excluded from identity categories, they assert MENA identity when answering relevant political questions.

No matter how they voted last night, every one of them has a say in maintaining Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin as their caucus leaders. Every one of them is accountable here.

So Democrats get:
1. A CR that will prevent the GOP from facing the wrath of Americans for a shutdown over the holidays
2. A coupon for one (1) meaningless ACA vote that will fail
3. An end to the illegal RIF/SNAP moves that are already before the courts
Those all seem like wins for the GOP.

Random realization (trying to connect with heritage speakers here): I don't think I really have a strong accent when I speak Farsi, but for some reason, I sound like a baby. I think I sound less fluent, because I sound like a little kid 😭
I need to, like, put on a grown up voice or something!

Douthat writes that 2024, when Harris lost by 1.5% of the popular vote, was "an ideological referendum and progressivism lost." I wonder why he didn't view the 2020 election, when Trump lost by 4.5% of the popular vote, as a far more significant loss for conservatism.

Comparing the relation between the presidential election results in 2020 and 2024 with the post-election commentary is a fascinating exercise.
2020
Biden 81,283,501 popular votes, 51.3%

2024
Trump 77,302,580 49.8%

THIS. There is a real stereotype is that “Racial and Ethnic Politics” is not a “rigorous subfield,” but it’s gonna be clear to us when you treat it as such and don’t put in the work. I can’t sugarcoat that.
I normally try to be a constructive reviewer. But if you are going to wander in from a different discipline and not even do a reasonable google scholar search to see if this is a question we have spent 100 years debating, then I am not going to sugar coat it.

It was great chatting with @gorenlj.bsky.social from the @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social about The Color of Civics.
In the episode, we discuss key findings from the book, my experiences as a public school teacher that sparked my interest in civic education, and the story behind the book’s cover.
