Black is the colour of Obsidian. Popular for use in weaponry and tools, it turns out to also be quite useful for channelling magic. Oh, and the entire city of Altepetl is covered in the stuff - although harvesting from the City is unlikely to win you any favours.
Heya #NovemberWorldbuilders!
We're talking about COLORS in our world this week. Tell me about something in your world that's BLACK. Do you use it symbolically? Do you have any special black objects or animals or magical items in your world? Tell us about them!

#NovemberWorldbuilders The Ash Shaman paints her face white with bone-ash, and leads rituals to commune with ancestors. White is very much her colour - both the whites of ash (the words "blanc" and "black" both come from the mix of white and black in ash) and the white of vellum, parchment or paper🧵
Hello, #NovemberWorldbuilders friends!
We're in COLORS week! Tell me about something in your world that's WHITE. Have you used it symbolically? Any special white clothes, rocks, animals, or magical artifacts you'd like to talk about?
November 7, 2025 at 6:47 PM
Hmmm, purple... it's a rare colour for sure. There are certainly purple flowers and fruits - Matlaktlome is as based on the Amazon Rainforest as it is on Mesoamerica and the Andes - but none of them really have specific importance.

The purple dyes that can be produced here are valuable trade goods🧵
#NovemberWorldbuilders
This week's theme is COLORS! Tell me about something in your world that's PURPLE. Do you use it symbolically? Do you have anything special in your worldbuilding that's purple? Maybe an animal, jewels, a garment, a flower, or something more strange and magical?
November 6, 2025 at 4:13 AM
Green is the primary colour of Matlaktlome. The rainforest is green, the mountains are green (thanks to the Graven Court's farming skills) the river delta and lakes are green (thanks to the eastern civilization's farming skills).

The whole region is a place where food is in surplus🧵
Hey there, #NovemberWorldbuilders!
It's COLORS week! Tell me about something in your world that's green. This one is probably more common, since green is so strongly associated with nature. Do you have any cool greenery in your world? Or maybe you've used it for an object? Tell me about it!
November 4, 2025 at 8:20 PM
Hmmm, can't say you're wrong about yellow and orange being underused in my worldbuilding - I hadn't even realised the place where they must exist.

The Tetocani are an insectoid race, named from the Nahuatl word for their local wasps - as such, they naturally have black and orange stripes.🧵
It's #NovemberWorldbuilders!
We're talking about colors in our worlds! Tell me about something in your world that's YELLOW or ORANGE? I find that these two are often underrated/underused in worldbuilding, so I'd love to hear what you have. Maybe something symbolic of the sun or made of gold?
November 4, 2025 at 3:21 AM
The bluest of things is water. Matlaktlome is built around its river, Meyallo, and the great City is fed by the riches of the (relatively) calm delta where the river meets the sea.
In truth, both often take on a brown tint from the massive amounts of sediment, but they are still blue in spirit.🧵
Heya #NovemberWorldbuilders!
Continuing with COLORS! Tell me about something in your world that's BLUE. Do you use it symbolically? Do you have anything special in your worldbuilding that's blue? Maybe an important object symbolic of the sea or sky? Tell me about your blues!

After a break through October, I'm back to talking about Matlaktome; our meso+south american #13thage setting that we discussed in #Septopolis.

The most obvious of symbolicly Red things is the Bloodstained Priest - the leader of the sacrifices that take place in The City🧵
Welcome to #NovemberWorldbuilders!
This week's theme is COLORS! Tell me about something in your world that's RED. Do you use it symbolically? Do you have anything special in your worldbuilding that's red. Maybe an animal, jewels, a garment, a flower, or something more strange and magical?

People on Bluesky first: @muzetrigger.bsky.social has given useful feedback during this and asked questions, which really helps.
@khonri.com provided the whole structure to make this possible.
@greethewriter.bsky.social reposting and sharing things makes it all more rewarding🧵

It takes a village! Or floating city, underground hideout, star fleet...

Anyways, a single person isn't running a show by themselves, nor do we create alone. So, today, give some acknowledgement to those who inspired you in some way on your journey.

Catching up for the last couple of days - this one took a while because I (ste) cannot draw a thing, so I had to wait for my wife to have time to put together the Icon symbols for The Rat King and The Bloody priest.
Here are her originals:

I've mentioned the two biggest factions in Altepetl a few times - The Bloodstained Priest leads the religion from the temples, and The Rat King leads the economy from the shadows.
Each has a directly adverse force; demon cults and established capital respectively.🧵

What people or groups are making the biggest splash here that's plot relevant in the most or least spoiler-y way possible? Who's your Giovanni and his Team Rocket?

(Look, I'm a big Pokémon fan; first thing I thought of.)

As a #13thAge setting, I'm going to go with plot hooks rather than specific timeline - things that COULD be happening that would make it interesting for the player characters. For each of the three tiers of play I'll give a hook for The Bloody Priest, The Rat King and one other power🧵

Thinking more on current events here... what's going on RIGHT NOW here?

What are your (or your players') characters about to walk into like they've just come back with pizza and now everything's the Darkest Timeline (or not)?

The Altepetl calendar has 18 months of 20 days - but of those only 18 days are workdays for anyone other than priests.
Each of the 20 days has a resonance, and those whose work directly links to that resonance are not to work on that day but instead to celebrate.🧵

Moving into current events! Feel free to talk about multiple if you'd like to, but first and foremost I want to know what the characters might get to experience some R&R and fun times (this might tie into tomorrow's question, for maybe not so fun times!).

The Bloodstained Priest's armed forces extract taxes from the entire region in exchange for metaphysical protections.
Most people are vaguely glad that the protections exist, in that sort of "you complain when they fail, don't praise when they succeed" way that vital resources get🧵

Lets start with the unusual aspects of law in Altepetl - firstly, each of the 20 boroughs of the city has the right to enforce its own bylaws, criminalizing certain behaviors, or adding fines, fees or taxes (with a portion of funds collected going to the city's central budget)🧵

or do both lol

While there is technically a ruler of Altepetl as a whole, a Grand Sheriff, that position is largely irrelevant - in centuries past they would keep the whole region in order, but in the modern era the idea of true order is laughable. Instead, each borough/district has a Governor.🧵

There are many reasons to visit Altepetl - but trade, fame-seeking, and using the urban hub status to do well as a crafter all work pretty much the same as any city. Outsiders are often viewed as too weak to live here - but if they stick it out, are accepted.
Weird reasons are below:🧵

Yesterday was for the people already here, today's for those that aren't.

Why do people want to come here (entertainment, education, work, etc.)?
And are the people that live here okay with that? 👀

Gorgons are interesting , with a lot of open questions about their origin. So for G, Amy's done a lot of reading to find out about different versions of their story. Did you know that Medusa might have been an African goddess?
Also, I think her #art is cute - as usual.

Third places aren't something I've thought about before, which means I'll be spinning up something as I write.

Firstly there are shrines and temples all over the shop - the gods are always being called to Altepetl so why not take the chance to hear them while they're here?🧵

Altepetl's dominant industries are fishing, mining, tool-crafting, enchanting, delving (both of ruins and dungeons) and administrating the whole system of sacrificing people to the gods in order to protect the region from demonic invasion.

That last one doesn't tend to make friends.🧵

TGIF or something. I'm going to ruin it by asking you about work. More specifically, the predominant workforce in this place.

Then take it one step further: what's sold elsewhere (including non-physical "goods") and what must be brought in from outside?

There are three that come immediately to mind, which is probably enough, from top to bottom they are:
1) The High Temple
2) The Demon-Portal
3) The Imperial Court
I'll give each its own section of the thread below - but first I'll note that the three sit on a perfect vertical line.🧵

Now for the neat specific buildings! We went over natural landmarks almost two weeks ago, but this time, what about the ones made by the people?

What's their history and importance?

Altepetl was built by Coatli, human-sized snakes with telekinesis. This has some effects on the architecture - if a giant snake with psychic powers (and no legs) couldn't use it it's probably not here. No stairs, making the place wheelchair accessible by accid... err, default.🧵

We talking ARCHITECTURAL STYLES. 🤩 Materials, methods, all that good stuff that goes into how it looks.

Keep in mind this is for the general "whole." Save your specific fancy structures for tomorrow. The manmade landmarks get their own day.

Altepetl is a massively populous city, it plays host to hundreds of thousands of people. But also a cramped one, bounded by the surrounding river. I'd need to research, but maybe 5 square miles.
The stone structure that is the skeleton of the city was built to a plan, all at once.🧵

#Septopolis 16

The aesthetics are for tomorrow! Today's just the overall size and layout. Was it thoroughly planned with grid structures or did it grow informally and organically across the years?

Perhaps some sector or districts talk if this is a tad too simple... 👀

The quick tl;dr version - There are many gods, not all of them good, but they don't act in our world without both permission and power - sacrifice in this world helps them act as it doesn't have to cross the veil around reality. Demons are horrible creatures, gods keep them out.🧵

Altepetl's food culture is heavily based around fish, being as it is a city founded on a very fertile river leading into a very fertile sea - most meat-sources that aren't at least semi-aquatic is noticeably more expensive, although turkeys are still common as waste-processors.🧵

The plumbing system in Altepetl is, as expected for a fantasy world, really rather good - enchantments bound into it allow it to filter the river-water into pure fresh water, and then pump it uphill to the very peak of the city - a fountain atop the grand pyramid. 🧵

Moving onto the technology or magic drives this place! Are you sci-fi? Fantasy with magic giving access to near-equivalent comforts of the modern day? Alternative Earth that took a completely different tech dev path?

Plus an extra question for thought...
