“Why me?” G’raha whispers, though perhaps he begins to see the shape of the answer. Arkin smiles, his hand grazing G’raha’s shoulder, trying once again to heal the hurt there. This time, G’raha focuses on relaxing. “I could ask you the same thing. I saw you, you know. In an Echo. You spoke of giving up your life for mine. And not only your life, but your precious time spent living. Why me? I wondered. Because I’m the Warrior of Light and Darkness? A tool worth saving at any cost?” G’raha is already shaking his head, but he stills when Arkin thumbs over the shard of crystal in his cheek, wiping the tears there. “Will you tell me?” his Warrior asks, so close their breath mingles. G’raha’s heart hammers in his chest, and he can feel its mirror all the way in Arkin’s fingertips. They find one another’s gaze, dizzy and almost overwhelming in their shared intensity. It was a truth G’raha had hardly let himself consider, even within the confines of his Tower, his hood and robe shed in the solitude of the small hours. He pauses, unsure of how to give voice to it. “It was the memory of you at first,” he begins slowly, “of our short time together. Those memories warmed me when little else could. And then, as the years passed… it was the myth of you. From what few scraps I had gathered before I arrived on the First.” The words come faster now, tumbling out of him. “Accounts spoke of your strength, aye, but even more of your boundless kindness, and I pinned my hopes on meeting that man once more before my end. But from the moment you let me into your room that night… the way you opened your heart for me, I—” The admission bubbles up, spills over. “‘Twas because I fell in love with you, over and over and over.”

Few things in this life gave Feo Ul pause. It was in their nature to follow their curiosity, to learn secrets, to pursue whatever fancy caught their eye. But the prospect of entering the dreams—or nightmares—of a Lightwarden did make them shiver, just a little. Not enough to stop them from doing it, of course. The King touched their sapling's forehead, closed their eyes, and let their essence slip into that other place. They didn't know exactly what to expect; man's dreams could be terribly unpredictable (which was part of the fun). But when they opened their eyes, they were greeted with… nothing. No memories, no visions, no voices or people. Nothing. It was as if the Light had entirely purified his mind, leaving behind not even the bleached remains of the person. Feo Ul's heart dropped. Perhaps they had been wrong to hope. Yet, just like their vigil over the ceaseless waves, something compelled them to remain in the oppressive Nothing, and continue to look. They flew this way and that, searching for any bit of Something. And eventually, they found it: the faintest of threads, a tiny distortion trailing into the distance. Easier to feel than to see, really. It was just like the one Feo Ul had seen on the horizon, and just the same, they followed it to its end. They were surprised indeed to find that it led to the Crystal Exarch.
