In which I beg archaeologists to sign up for the fall semester of Skype a Scientist, because we're getting buried in requests for your area of expertise.

Sign up here:

I run @skypeascientist.bsky.social which matches scientists w/classrooms, libraries, etc for Q&As.

We match First Lego League teams too. This tends to wipe out one category of scientist bc so many teams sign up for the same category (this year, archaeologists). We're almost out of archaeologists.

Hey, Boston area FIRST LEGO League teams! We’re opening up our lab on Wednesday, October 15th for a special FLL Open House!

🚨 Big milestone! 🚨After nearly 2 years, we are very proud to announce that our team and volunteers have fully transcribed all 586 handwritten fire claims submitted by Charlestown residents after the town was burned during the Battle of Bunker Hill. (1/

We’re willing to bet you don’t think much about snap buttons. Mostly because we don’t either, but today they’re getting their moment in the sun. We’re exploring the contents of an early 20th-century cache found from the Dorchester Industrial School for Girls. (1/5)

Did you catch us on @wgbh.org's @thecultureshowgbh.bsky.social yesterday? Click the link below & jump to 41:30 to hear our Public Archaeologist, Nadia, talk about doing archaeology in Boston & the artifacts featured in the free Unearthing Childhood exhibit, now open! www.wgbh.org/.../july-28-....

ICYMI, we're investigating an object cache found in a stone wall of the carriage house (no longer standing) at the former Dorchester Industrial School for Girls. Going artifact by artifact, we’re kicking off with shiny things because we’re grown-ups & we can start with dessert if we want to! 🧵 1/5

We need a little break from the 18th century, so let's take a journey back in time to the early 20th.

At the 2015 excavation of the former Dorchester Industrial School for Girls, City of Boston archaeologists & volunteers came across something cool, which we've never really shown off before. (1/6)

It's Monday. Let us distract you for a moment. Can you identify all these artifacts from our most recent dig on Monument Ave in Charlestown? Bonus points if you can give an approx. date. Let us know how many you got in the comments! And no cheating! We won't know, but you & your search engine will👀

Missed us up on Bunker Hill for the 250th yesterday? Fear not! Our pop-up lab is open today til 4pm! Swing by 7 School Street downtown behind the Old Corner Bookstore to see some of the artifacts from our recent digs, check out our exhibit on the Siege of Boston, and chitchat about nerd stuff 😎(1/2)

This week, we planned to excavate at the site of the 1775 Redoubt fortifications on Breeds Hill, now the site of the Bunker Hill Monument. The ground-penetrating radar results suggest the place we were most likely to the redoubt is exactly where the NPS tent for the 250th is located (1/5)

We are just about at our maximum depth of 4 feet (OSHA rule) and are starting to find larger stone deposits that may be a wall or footing. We’re hoping we’ve (finally) reached the 18th century! #digBOS #digCTown #digBH250 #Boston250 #digBoston250 #dig250 #BOBH250 #BH250

Stop by our pop-up lab and Siege of Boston exhibit today until 4! We’re at 7 School Street
June 4, 2025 at 2:35 PM
Well, we found the demo layer! We’re still in early 19th century fill layers, but we’ve been keeping our eyes peeled for the wall of a building that cut across the yard we’re excavating on Monument Ave. (2/3)
June 3, 2025 at 6:33 PM
We found this humerus! We’re in more fill deposits on Monument Ave (oh hey, urban archaeology!) But it’s full of cool stuff! Thanks to our on-site osteologist & her traveling type collection funded by @bosarchaeobff & #legacyfundforboston we know that this fragment is from a very young adult cow.

“Oh, it’s Arpége!” Did anyone else’s mom have the 90s revamp of this classic 1927 perfume in the bathroom growing up? Thanks to a quick childhood flashback we easily identified the image on this glass perfume bottle stopper as the logo of Lanvin Arpége. (1/6)

Pop-up lab open today until 4, 7 School Street

We’ve closed up shop behind Christ Church & started a new dig in a private backyard on Monument Ave, land which in 1775 belonged to James & Phebe Trumball. James, a tanner, got the land from his father Samuel. A house, tannery, & distill house were listed on the deed at the time of purchase in 1753.
