To all the other "computer people" going to see family during the holidays:

When they complain about their iPhone being messed up, the option you're looking for this year is "reduce transparency" under accessibility settings.

You're welcome in advance.

The swear word was played for at least 26 minutes, an Ofcom report says.

Just finished setting up Immich and importing my Google Photos library. Pretty good so far, but the default geocoder (based on GeoNames) is really quite bad. And apparently the devs have refused to implement anything better or allow external geocoders because people will just use Nominatim and […]

I need to remember to use tmux more often when running long-running tasks over ssh.

Especially if those tasks include `apt update && apt upgrade`.

I've been forgetting to write here about the things I've been working on, so a short thread.

First up, I saw a post about the Up-to-date Sandwich Book: 300 Ways to Make a Sandwich (1909), and saw that there's actually a 1927 […]

Due to circumstances well within our control (me being ridiculous), things have escalated from there. (Rainbow approves, though, which is what really matters.)

My cat Rainbow likes to sit in this basket in my bathroom. My daughter painted a portrait of Rainbow in the basket. I hung it in the bathroom, naturally. Then I got a photo of Rainbow sitting in the basket underneath the painting.

Easy Delivery Co. is a fun little game so far. Had to turn the CRT effects off though, and I need to spend time tweaking the sensitivity on my Steam Controller.

iOS 26.1 seems to have fixed some things about Liquid Glass, but not enough to let me turn Reduce Transparency and Reduce Motion off. And now the animation when opening/closing home screen folders is worse.

@heigit did a great comparison of OSM land use data with an external dataset. But I have a gripe with how they present OSM as the inferior dataset. I blogged about it at https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/tordans/diary/407524
Authoritative Data is Not More Right Just Because It’s Authoritative
HeiGIT recently published an analysis together with the German Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), comparing land cover data from OSM with the official CORINE Land Cover (CLC) dataset from BKG.

iOS 26 is just as ugly and annoying as expected. Reduce transparency helps make it usable, but uglier.

I am now 1 for 2 for working NH state payphones.

This one at a park-and-ride went clunk when I dialed the test number, but had no sound/dialtone and didn't show up in the log.

Y'think it's worth reporting to *checks notes* "Inmate Calling Solutions"?
