In 1996 I did a little in internship at BBC Westminster. At the time, Robbie Gibb was one of the producers there. Even in that period, he was self evidently a pro-Tory apparatchik, who made no attempt to hide his agenda from his colleagues or even from the little work experience kid.

Trump won the Election one week later - in a landslide.
We’d love to know how Panorama caused him ‘serious reputational damage’.
I'm not about to go up against Joshua Rozenberg on legal analysis, but his assessment on Radio 4 right now seems a bit odd. First, BBC player *isn't* available in Florida, is it? That's why you need a vpn to watch the Beeb there.

For anyone in Oxford, I am speaking to the Strategy, Statecraft, and Technology (Changing Character of War) Centre (SST-CCW) at All Soul's today at 1.30pm, on the topic of how we can best make sense of US foreign & defence policy.

Looks pretty conclusive to me: we await the reaction from Olusoga & Lammy. Both recently a bit busy with their work - ‘Traitors’ & ‘Prisons’.
November 11, 2025 at 8:58 AM
It looks like Prof Olusoga (& David Lammy) have some serious explaining to do.
November 11, 2025 at 8:53 AM
This is certainly something the BBC should be required to explain. We all heard the comment implying British soldiers of colour were denied war graves (which tbh was most surprising). It seems it’s not true. Pretty bad.

‘Serious error’. How serious? Why not let a court decide, esp one in Florida which has strong free speech laws? The implication in the prog is that Trump did not incite the attack on the Capitol bc he used the phrase ‘peacefully, patriotically’ 1x & ‘fight’ 21 times. In a speech you should read.
November 11, 2025 at 8:44 AM
You’re right. Trump used the word ‘fight’ 21 times in that speech (‘peace[ful]’ only once). The Proud Boys got his message (he’s pardoned over a 1000 of them). As for $1bn ‘damages’, he wasn’t damaged, he won the election by a landslide. The BBC should say ‘not a cent, get lost, free speech rules’.
Trump is a convicted felon insurrectionist who refused to accept the 2020election results - his rhetoric inflamed his mob supporters to attack the capital -

Patel has few qualifications for his key role as FBI Director - apart from total loyalty to Trump, the only ‘qualification’ Trump cares about.
November 10, 2025 at 8:56 PM
Erhem.
Patel looks mighty strange.

By apologising, the BBC has given Trump an added incentive to sue. How clever was that? Starmer needs to step in and stop this nonsense. It's taxpayers' money we're talking about here. Trump (and Farage) want to destroy public service broadcasting, not just in the USA but here as well. Damn cheek.
The BBC has long pursued a strategy of appeasing its enemies and alienating its friends.

The result is an endless series of capitulations to those political forces most determined to destroy it

The biggest of big business bankrolls Reform to help small businesses. Hmm.
November 10, 2025 at 4:13 PM
So the BBC has apologized for a very minor error. Trump not only wins but can sue with greater chance of success. All this from a self-proclaimed champion of free speech. You could not make this up.

Maybe Keir should demand the heads of major US news networks any time they imply Britain is on the brink of civil war or that we live under sharia law. Or does it not work both ways?

This stabbing took place last Friday. Why have the cops told us nothing about the background of the alleged murderer? A very disturbing matter. Was this a 'care in the community' or a terror-related incident?

Our man in Havana, er DC.
How very interesting that Farage equates the BBC with Putin’s Russia. ‘Frankly’. Frank is the one thing Nigel is not.

The Telegraph is a good read tbh (some brilliant stuff) even if you have to totally ignore its crazy, biased Brexit reporting. In some ways much better now than The Times.
At this point could somebody please tell me hie many people in the UK actually read the Telegraph, it feels like a relevant question.
Don’t think I saw a single post from Trump himself about the BBC over the whole week btw, let alone an actual comment. It was all from the White House press team, in response to queries from UK media. Not sure the President even knows what Panorama *is*.
November 10, 2025 at 8:38 AM
It seems increasingly clear that Boris Johnson’s appointees to the Board have saw their chance to break & control the BBC. Leaking to The Times & Telegraph. Boris’s last hurrah (we hope).
Trump did not accept President Bidens win in 2020 - his inflammatory speeches incited his mob followers to invade the capital - it was horrific to watch.

Re the BBC, 'only nineties kids will remember' the DG post, pre Tony-Hall, was a hiding to nothing. John Birt was constantly criticised, Greg Dyke resigned over Hutton, poor George Entwistle only lasted 54 days! Mark Thompson was the great survivor but look at his Wiki (Brand, Savile, Nick Griffin).

A desperately sad day for UK Public Service Broadcasting. We suspect The Times wants to replace the BBC as the medium that explains the UK to itself; The Telegraph wants the UK to be linked in an ever closer union with Trump. Both are cock-a-hoop today. These are big battles for Britain.
November 10, 2025 at 7:45 AM
Tim Davie quits as BBC director-general
BBC’s editors found it hard to navigate a path through a divided & bitter UK & have erred. But the core principle of reliable public service broadcasting should not be sacrificed to political bullying from any quarter.

‘Free speech’ they cry - except when POTUS is being criticised. Ugh
Badenoch & Farage take Trump’s side against the BBC. Let’s hope Starmer stands with our public service broadcaster. As he should.
